Woody Guthrie Center 

The life of Woody Guthrie, the folk musician who fought for human rights and wrote some of the most influential songs in history, has inspired millions of people worldwide. T-town pays homage to the legendary singer Woody Guthrie with the Woody Guthrie Center dedicated to educating visitors about his life, legacy, and relevance in American history.  

In addition to learning about his musical career and listening to some of his finest works, you can also check out the number of photos, manuscripts, and books on display, including Guthrie’s lyrics journal and his mandolin. Special exhibits and festivals that showcase the work of other artists are also organized here throughout the year. This place is definitely one of the best things to see in Tulsa.

Visit the Jazz Hall of Fame at Tulsa Union Depot

The Jazz Hall of Fame, located at the Union Station in Tulsa, honors the legacy of jazz, blues, and gospel music and musicians from all over the state. The hall of fame has exhibits like photographs, artifacts, and biographical information of several other musical legends.  

The Hall place sheds light on the role that Oklahoma played in the development of this music genre. They also hold an annual induction program to recognize the meaningful contributions made by individuals and groups towards music while also hosting live performances and free weekly jam sessions. It is indeed one of the most interesting Tulsa things to do!

Visit the Historic Greenwood District

Greenwood district was once called the “Black Wall Street” due to the prominent concentration of African American businesses. It was destroyed during the 1921 riots but rebuilt from the ground up by those who chose to stay back.  

The Greenwood Cultural Center is a prominent tourist attraction here that provides a lesson in the history of the Greenwood Community and district. Route 66

Tulsa is one of the cities through which the iconic Route 66, also known as the Mother Road, passes. It is filled with scenic views and rustic buildings. Route 66 also has excellent representations of the art deco style of architecture and some wonderful neon signs.  

Amongst the many exciting places that dot this part of the route, Campbell Hotel and Ollie’s Station Restaurant are definitely worth your time. You can conclude your drive at the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza, where a gateway welcomes visitors traveling along Route 66 when they either enter or leave Tulsa.

Gilcrease Museum

Situated in the happening downtown of Tulsey Town, Gilcrease Museum is one of the most cherished Tulsa attractions. It has the world’s largest and most comprehensive collection of art, culture, and history of North and South America.  

It has a collection of more than 350,000 items with material and archaeology dating as far back as 12,000 B.C. The collection includes Native American artwork, paintings, sculptures, books, antique maps, pottery, and old manuscripts. The Gilcrease Museum also has eleven beautifully manicured and unique themed gardens spread across 23 acres of land.

Philbrook Museum of Art

Philbrook Museum of Art is one of those Tulsa attractions that you must visit if you are a history lover. The deco-style Philbrook mansion is the former home of oil tycoon Mr. Waite Phillips and has 72 rooms. It houses permanent art collections, mainly consisting of pieces from Native American and African American origins and stunning artwork from African, European, and Asian antiquity.  

Another attraction is the 23 acres lush garden featuring Renaissance-inspired architecture, dramatic water fountains, reflecting pools, and elaborate wrought-iron niches. The garden at Philbrook provides you with the feeling of tranquility along with noteworthy sculptures. Admission to the Philbrook Museum of Art is free, and you can either avail of a guided tour or explore the site on your own.

Blue Dome Entertainment District

If you are wondering what to do in Tulsa, you should surely visit the Blue Dome Entertainment district! It gets its name for the renovated gas station, the Blue Dome, and is known for its eclectic nightlife and sophisticated culinary scene.

Prayer Tower that at Oral Roberts University 

The Prayer Tower, situated on the campus of Oral Roberts University, is a 200 feet (60.9 meters) long glass and steel structure that symbolizes the human need for prayer and communion with God. It signifies that God is the center of everything and prayer’s central role in the university’s goals.  

The black, gold and white color palette of the tower gives it a luxurious look. An eternal flame burning atop the tower symbolizes the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the shape of the tower resembles the Star of David from the air. The tower is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens making it one of the top things to do in Tulsa.

Tulsa Drillers Baseball

Tulsa has its own minor league baseball team named the Tulsa Drillers, and you can catch them playing exciting games at the ONEOK Field. This legendary team has been named the Texas League Champions four times. 

You can also enjoy fireworks show after many home game nights. There are several food options to choose from during the game and an all-you-can-eat buffet when it comes to the munchies.

Boston Avenue Methodist Church

The Boston Avenue Methodist Church situated downtown was opened in 1929. It is famous for its art deco architecture and has been placed in the National Register of Historic Places.  

It hosts beautiful service and live performances during Easter and Christmas. The Boston Avenue Methodist Church is also regularly used for several other live events and music throughout the year. Visiting this church, either for admiring the ecclesiastical art deco or attending a sermon, will leave you awestruck.

Tulsa Performing Arts Center

The Tulsa Performing Arts Center hosts concerts, Broadway shows, ballet, opera almost every night of the week. It houses four main theatres, one studio place, one art gallery, and a large reception hall, with the Chapman Music Hall being the largest venue at the Center.  

The exciting design of the center was envisioned and brought to life by the famous architect Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the former World Trade Centers. The Center also hosts performances by local and international talent and also features impressive speakers and comedian line-ups.

Tulsa Air and Space Museum

Tulsa Air and Space Museum opened in 1998 and showcases Oklahoma’s rich aviation history with vintage airplane displays and interactive exhibits. The space exhibit provides information regarding the city’s involvement with the International Space Station in manned and unmanned programs.  

You also get a chance to operate a robotic arm and maneuver a flight through a wind tunnel with the help of realistic simulators in the museum. A state-of-the-art planetarium was added in 2006, which takes you above the skies and past many galaxies, stars, planets, and asteroids and leaves you with a sense of wonderment.

Tulsa Zoo

Tulsa Zoo is one of the best Tulsa attractions when you have little ones in tow. It was named “America’s Favorite Zoo” in 2005 by Microsoft Game Studios. The zoo has more than 1,500 animals from more than 430 species from all over Asia and Africa.  

It houses animals like African Lions, Malayan Tigers, Australian Kangaroos, Chinese Alligators, to name a few. The zoo is very focused on wildlife conservation and education. When in the zoo, you must visit the Lost Kingdom, Chimpanzee Connection, the Giraffe Experience, and the Helmerich Sea Lion Cove, among the other wonderful exhibits.

Golden Driller Statue

The Golden Driller statue is 76 feet tall and weighs a whopping 43,500 pounds! It is the sixth-tallest statue in the United States. Your trip to Tulsa won’t be complete without visiting this noteworthy site.  

This will be the shortest stop, but it’s worth making as the Golden Driller truly represents its history and oil connection. Tulsa was once known as the “Oil Capital of the World” and had the largest known oil reservoir. The statue was built in Texas for a trade fair, but Tulsa gave its branding and became its final home.

Just Dance at Cain’s Ballroom 

Cain’s Ballroom had a humble start in the 1920s as an automobile garage later purchased by Madison W. “Daddy” Cain and renamed Cain’s Dance Academy. It has since become one of the city’s best dancing venues and attracts several big names worldwide.  

It has played host to many performances from Western swing, rock-and-roll, to post-punk. The dance floor is lit with a neon star and a silver disco ball, and the walls are filled with oversized photos of musicians who have performed at Cain’s. The concert hall also hosts live bands and has excellent food options for you to munch on while enjoying the performances.

Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art

The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art is spread across over 13,700 square feet of land. It was built in 1966 and was then known as The Gershon and Rebecca Fenster Museum of Jewish Art. Sherwin Miller was the first curator of the Museum.  

It is a great place to learn about Jewish history and art. It is the only American Jewish Museum in the region and consists of more than 16,000 pieces of archaeological and ritual significance, historical documents, and fine arts. It also has a model synagogue. At the lower level, there is the Kaiser Holocaust Memorial which has a somber impact on visitors.

Tulsa Botanic Garden 

If you are a nature lover, then the Tulsa Botanic Garden will surely leave you mesmerized. The garden, a preferred destination for weddings, is spread across 170 acres of land and has a variety of plants and flowers on display. The major attraction at the Tulsa Botanic Garden is the A.R. and Marylouise Tandy Floral Terraces which feature more than 100,000 spring bulbs and roses. 

The garden also has a Children’s Discovery Garden, which provides a lot of interactive fun for children and people of all ages with Spring Giant, carnivorous plants, Sensory Walk, and a Tree Fort. It also features a Lotus Pool and a Lakeside Promenade which encompasses a seven-acre lake.

Oklahoma Aquarium

If you are looking for fun things to do in Tulsa with kids, then do visit the Oklahoma Aquarium situated in Jenks, a southern suburb of Tulsa. Although the Sooner State is landlocked, it has still managed to host the largest aquatic attraction in the Midwest, situated on the banks of the Arkansas River and covering an area of almost 72,000 square feet.  

It houses more than 500 species of aquatic animals and is particularly known for its groundbreaking coral research. The various on-prem exhibits enable the visitors to experience aquariums with a completely new viewpoint while also providing a lot of information.

The Gathering Place 

The Gathering Place on the banks of the Arkansas River offers both relaxation as well as recreation. It is a part of the Tulsa River Parks and provides a variety of fun activities to choose from. You can indulge in kayaking at the ONEOK Boathouse or go skating at the skate park, or perhaps enjoy a game of basketball or volleyball at the SemGroup Sports Club.  

You can also visit the Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area, perfect for hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding. The Chapman Adventure Playground can be enjoyed by people of all ages. You can also attend several live performances at the QuikTrip Great Lawn.

Go hiking at Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area

Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area spread across over 300 acres of land, running parallel to the Arkansas River. It is close to the city’s downtown and makes for a perfect terrain for bikers, hikers, and runners.  

The area is covered with thick vegetation and steep hills and provides a beautiful view of nature. Apart from the marked trails – Red, Blue, Yellow, and Pink, it also has 25 miles of unmarked trails. Amongst these, the Pink trail is the longest and provides scenic views of the Turkey Mountains and sunsets.

Go shopping at the Boxyard Tulsa 

The Boxyard isn’t your ordinary shopping destination. The design of the entire area is inspired by an iconic London development. The shops are constructed of repurposed shipping containers, and it has become a hub of retail, food, and beverages.  

It features shops like Modern Mess, a women’s fashion store, and Okie Dokie, a souvenir store. The Open Container is a full-service bar with a patio at the second story, which lets you enjoy the view along with delicious food and drinks. You can also indulge in gourmet micro-batch ice cream at the Rose Rock Micro creamery.

The Brady Arts District 

Visiting the Tulsa Arts District (previously known as the Brady Arts District) should definitely be on your list of things to do in Tulsa. Located in the northern part of downtown, this historic district is vital to the local culture.

It has grown from Tulsa’s oil-rich past with cultural icons such as the Cain’s Ballroom, Ole Lady on Brady, and the Tulsa Theater and has evolved through time to match with the present.

Safari Joe’s H20

Safari Joe’s H20 Water Park is Tulsa’s only water park, and it doesn’t fail to impress. You can slip and slide on Raptor Rapids, the only water roller coaster in Oklahoma or head to the Big Foot Bay for a high dive, an aquatic rock-climbing wall, water sports areas, and sunbathing. It also has dedicated kids play area named the Tiny Turtle Lagoon.  

It also has some in-park entertainment like live music, magic shows, and movies. If you do not want to participate in water-based activities, you may visit the Reptile World exhibit, which houses many amazing exotic creatures.

The Cave House 

This oddly designed house is difficult to miss if you are downtown. The Cave house will give you the feeling of being in the Flintstone era and will really intrigue you.  

The best part is this house can be toured. It was made in the 1920s and was a chicken restaurant. While touring the house, you will learn a lot more about its fascinating history.

Discovery Lab 

The Discovery Lab is a unique and interactive kids’ science museum and play center. Opened as a museum without walls, it continues to engage children with science, technology, engineering, art, and math.  

It has many interactive exhibits and DIY crafts for kids. They also organize educational field trips regularly. Discovery Lab appeals to people from different walks of life and impacts many underserved children in the Tulsa region. It has recently moved to a 50,000 square foot venue at the Gathering Place.
