Staten Island Mall 

Also known as Si Mall, this is the largest mall in New York City. It is owned by Macerich and was built on the site of the former Castleton Corners shopping center. It is located in the Staten Island neighborhood at the corner of Veterans Road West and Richmond Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309.

Brookfield Place 

Brookfield Place, officially named 250 Vesey Street, is a mixed-use property in Lower Manhattan that opened in April 2012 and cost $1 billion. The shopping mall is operated by Brookfield Properties and is owned by a joint venture of Mitsui Fudosan and New York State.

Atlantic Terminal Mall 

This is located in the downtown Brooklyn neighborhood, next to the Atlantic Terminal train terminal, and is connected to many subway lines via the Atlantic Avenue/Barclays Center station.

The Apollo Theater  

The Apollo Theater has turned into a legendary place. Established in 1914, many careers have been made from this platform. The popular Amateur Nights is a cultural gift to the neighborhood from the Apollo Theater.

Studio Museum in Harlem  

Studio Museum in Harlem is a contemporary art museum. It is dedicated to African American artists belonging to the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum’s specialty is that it helps organize events and art shows for emerging Black artists.  

Along with a permanent collection, the museum also has rotating exhibitions. However, the museum is temporarily closed for renovation and expansion.

El Museo Del Barrio 

Among the many art museums in New York City, El Museo Del Barrio needs special mention. The museum was founded in 1969 and has strived to bring to focus the art of underrepresented artists. The items present in the museum date back almost 800-1000 years. This is why it is considered an excellent resource and forum for Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American art.

Central Park Conservatory Gardens 

Thinking about what to do in Harlem? Central Park Conservatory Gardens are a great attraction in the neighborhood. Central Park can be reached from East as well as West Harlem. When entering from 5^th Avenue, you can come to the Conservatory Gardens directly.  

There are three distinct styles in the garden – French (romantic sculpture of Three Dancing Maidens), Italian (12-feet high jet fountain and tiered hedges), and English (perennial plants and shrubs). A fragment of Europe can be seen in the US in this garden. Various kinds of events, including weddings, are hosted in the place.

Graffiti Hall of Fame

Eat Some Soul Food

Abyssinian Baptist Church  

Abyssinian Baptist Church is one of the first African American Baptist churches in NYC, which started in 1808. However, the branch in Harlem was opened in 1923, under Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. For more than 30 years, Reverend Calvin Butts has served as pastor of the church and has been involved in many social works in the area. 

The church has some mandatory rules for visitors. According to its Tourist Policy, visitors can attend the 11:00 am service on Sunday; but they have to stay for full 2.5 hours until the service is completed. It is recommended to be moderately dressed while visiting the church.

Striver’s Row 

Striver’s Row is a historic district in Harlem that is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Around 130-row houses, which were constructed from 1891 to 1893, have been divided into four blocks. These were originally known as King Model Homes.  

There are different blocks in the area with several building styles. While some are red-brick and brownstone buildings, other houses are made of yellow brick and white limestone along with terra-cotta trim. Between some houses, there are small land plots, which were stable mews. Many eminent people have their residences in the area.

Alexander Hamilton Grange National Memorial 

This historic house is located in Hamilton Heights, North Harlem. Dating back to 1802, the home belongs to Alexander Hamilton — a significant figure in American History. Besides being one of America’s founding fathers, he was also the founder of the US Treasury System. A Broadway play has also been staged after him.

Visit the peaceful Strawberry Fields at Central Park

Walk on the 1.45-mile-long High Line Park 

Opened in 2009, this elevated linear park showcases art, food vendors, gardens, and stunning performances. Visit House of Art: The Whitney Museum 

Known as the ‘Whitney’, this is a popular art museum located in Manhattan. Founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930, this site is home to American art pieces, including paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, films, and videos created by more than 3,500 artists.

Governor’s Island 

A 172-acre land situated in the heart of New York Harbor, this island is known for the amazing views it offers. The hills are 70 feet above sea level and give breath-taking views of the Statue of Liberty and the New York Harbor. It also offers several recreational events that take place all year round.

Federal Hall 

New York’s first city hall is located on Wall Street and is the first Supreme Court, Congress, and Executive Branch offices of the United States of America. When the nation was declared a federal one in 1789, the original site was renamed ‘Federal Hall’ and is the place where George Washington was sworn in as the first president. It was later demolished in 1812.  

Today, the current structure comprises two buildings — one built-in federal style and the other in Greek-revival style. If you are looking for free stuff to do in NYC and have a serious interest in photography and architecture, this is the place for you.

New York Earth Room 

This is an interior structure made by New York-based artist and musician Walter de Maria in 1977. Currently maintained by the Dia Art Foundation, it is a 3,500-square-foot space filled with soil up to 22 inches and is a surreal piece of work.  

With 280 thousand pounds (127 kg) of soil, this is not a piece to be experienced from a distance. Rather, it demands to be smelt and sense the olfactory experience it offers. Although it is on the second floor of the building, you can smell it well before you see it.

Japan Society 

Being home to people coming from diverse cultures and traditions, NYC gives you the chance to experience a little bit of everything. The Japan Society is an organization that connects Japanese art and culture with the people of New York and the world.

Green-Wood Cemetery 

Green-Wood is one of the first rural cemeteries in the United States and is said to be among the most-visited tourist attractions. Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Museum 

Founded in 1969, this museum is dedicated to fashion and is known for the exhibitions it hosts. The collection includes about 50,000 garments, clothing, fabrics, and fashion accessories from the 18th century to the current times.  

Renowned designers such as Balenciaga, Dior, and Chanel are also part of the collection. The venue has three galleries that speak of separate cults and hosts exhibitions. A tour here takes you along the route that fashion has taken over the years and lets you get a closer look at its history.

Rockefeller Center Tree Light 

This is one of the most popular sites and sights in the US during the holiday season. The iconic Christmas tree tower is lit up, all white and bright, making it a scene worth cherishing forever. This ceremony takes place post-Thanksgiving and is celebrated with musical and ice-skating performances.

Watch the Shakespeare in the Park 

The members of the Public Theater perform the plays of William Shakespeare at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Bronx Zoo 

Being a flagship park of the Wildlife Conservation Society, it is an escape into nature for all leading busy lives in New York City. It was opened on November 8th, 1899, and is home to over 700 species of animals.

Socrates Sculpture Park 

This museum cum public park is known for the array of multimedia installations and variety of sculptures. It aims to support artists in making art accessible to the public. A riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite were left abandoned until a group of artists came together under Mark di Suvero in 1986 and transformed it into an open studio for artists.

St Patrick’s Cathedral 

This Catholic Cathedral is the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America. It was designed by James Renwick Jr., one of America’s most successful architects from the 19th century. The grandeur the site beholds also makes it a prime location for weddings.
