Hyde Park is an up-and-coming district where you’ll have tons of stuff to do and enjoy yourself. With lots of beautiful restaurants, killer food, shopping, nightlife, and outdoor spaces, there’s a lot of places to visit in the Hyde Park district. 

Jazz singing, learning with your kids, and a definitive French restaurant. This area is a slice of New York in Chicago. Or maybe it’s a slice of Paris. Regardless of which way you think of it, there’s an international feel to it which makes for fun things to do around town.

Andersonville 

Andersonville is located about 10 minutes north of the Loop and three miles west of Wrigley Field on the Brown Line. It’s a charming and historically significant part of town and it’s considered one of the better up-and-coming Chicago neighborhoods with Tanoshii by its side.  

Founded in 1870 by Swedish immigrants, Andersonville has established its own funky personality. Home to Swedish shops, farmer’s markets, restaurants, and cafes, this district is also home to Andersonville Brewing Company, Town Hall Pub, and the now famous Victory Garden Theater.

Pilsen 

If you look at a map of Chicago’s neighborhoods, Pilsen looks like an “L” turned on its side. It runs southwest to northeast from the Union Stockyard to Division Street in Little Village. Along the way, it crosses the Chicago River and angles west with Upper New York Avenue serving as its backbone. 

Built from scratch as part of several waves of immigration with each wave building upon what was there before, Pilsen has a rich history filled with industrial and artistic accomplishments. Much of this history is still being made today in this rapidly gentrifying neighborhood with visitors coming in by the day. Trust us when we sat this is one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago.

Logan Square 

Logan Square is one of the most interesting Chicago neighborhoods. It holds its own boundaries while being a part of more than one community. Much like Logan, this neighborhood has quintessential Chicago character: diverse, beautiful, and full of different people who are proud to call it their home. 

Logan Square conjures up images of shiny new coffee shops and restaurants and killer food. However, it’s ironic that a neighborhood that is known as Logan Square typically doesn’t include many square blocks.

Wrigleyville 

Wrigleyville adores its baseball team with a fervor second only to Cubs fans. Along Waveland Avenue, the main thoroughfare of Wrigleyville, the blue-green lights are ablaze year-round at bars and restaurants with Cubs themed names and decor. 

Wrigleyville is an interesting neighborhood because it caters to both tourists and locals. There are a variety of pubs, restaurants, and shops that stay open late. There’s also a community feel here as well as friendly neighbors. The true locals are few and far between, but the population is stable thanks to the condo developments that keep springing up.

West Loop

The West Loop is one of the fastest growing and best neighborhoods in Chicago and the best tech hub. You might have heard stories about the West Loop, a great little locality to live and work. If you have been to the West Loop, you probably spent an afternoon at the Chicago Cultural Center or Giordano’s for deep dishes. 

The West Loop is a cultural hub and is home to many theaters like Steppenwolf, the best comedy clubs like Second City, and comedy stores like Annoyance Theatre. But there’s a lot more to the West Loop than pasta for dinner and improv for laughs.

Southport Corridor 

The Southport community is one of the most historic and beautiful on the South Side. It’s convenient to the Lake and downtown by way of the Metra Electric Line, but it’s still far enough from the hustle and bustle of city life. The proximity to beautiful beaches is a big draw for residents who enjoy running along Lake Michigan or riding bicycles on trails. 

The Southport neighborhood is a beautiful place for families. Its location along Lake Michigan provides views of the lake and harbor, a sandy beach with concession stands, and a boat launch. It also is home to Lincoln Park Zoo’s 23-acre Desert Dome, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and the Lincoln Park Conservatory.

Bronzeville

Bronzeville is one of the 77 officially designated community areas of Chicago. It is part of the Golden Corridor, which runs from the shore of Lake Michigan through downtown Chicago and onward south to University Park and Hyde Park. 

The neighborhood is named after the Bronzeville artistic and business community that settled here. It is composed of two distinct gores, which were commonly referred to together as Bronzeville: Washington Park and the Douglas Community Area.

Wicker Park 

Some people still consider Wicker Park to be a hipster haven. It was the first Chicago neighborhood to undergo gentrification, and have young urban professionals settling down and creating their own families. 

The New York Times named it the ‘hippest neighborhood on earth’ in 2004, and in recent years, several Chicago neighborhoods surrounding the former eastern edge of Polish Downtown now have encroaching clusters of condos, construction sites, trendy restaurants, killer food, and hip bars.

Boystown 

Boystown is the only predominantly gay neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago, centered at the intersection of Maplewood and Halsted Street, along with surrounding areas, in Lakeview. It was founded in the early 1970s as a small enclave for gay men (particularly those not from Chicago) living in nearby Lincoln Park or Oakland near DePaul University who wanted to live closer to where they worked.

Bridgeport 

Located north of the Chicago River, in the area known as Little Italy, Bridgeport is well known for its historically Italian roots. This neighborhood has seen many changes throughout the years but remains a beautiful area to live and work. 

It originally was known as Gowrie Creek Valley and was settled in 1833. The name was for a time changed to Blue Island Avenue but was changed to its present name to honor Jacob Levi Wardle (1816 1884), an English immigrant and important resident.

Old Town 

Old Town Historic District is the oldest, most architecturally beautiful part of the city. Chicago moved from a frontier town to a classical city between 1830 and 1860 and the character of its historic heart reflects that transition in a real way. There’s no shortage of things to see and do in Old Town neighborhood. If you are in search of a cozy, yet beautiful neighborhood, then look no further. This neighborhood is the perfect mix of nightlife and old-fashioned cafes.

Edgewater 

Edgewater, the city’s most unique district, is located just north of Andersonville and Lincoln Square. Edgewater still has that classic, generational neighborhood feeling — it has a strong sense of community.  

With approximately 3,500 residents, this leafy neighborhood is dominated by single-family homes with a handful of condos and a large number of renters and young families.  

Edgewater is bordered on two sides by the Chicago River; Clybourn to the North, Devon on the West. A notable attraction in this dainty locality is the Breakers.

Ravenswood 

Ravenswood is a trendy and fascinating district with a lot of cool features. It’s close to the city but staying true to its old charm that’s been there for many years. It has history and culture just waiting to be explored. 

It’s nestled just north of downtown Chicago and home to the historic Ravenswood Gardens. This neighborhood began as an artist’s haven back in the late 1800s. The two biggest draws to Ravenswood are the architecture of its gorgeous buildings and some great new restaurants.

Chinatown 

The Chinatown neighborhood in Chicago is one of the largest in the mid-west. Restaurants, shops, and banks line Wentworth Avenue, forming a traditional Chinese style main street. Chinatown is experiencing a building boom unlike any other part of the city. It is the largest Chinatown in the US outside of San Francisco and has become a real attraction for visitors who want to try authentic Chinese cuisine or buy some unusual merchandise, like tea or pottery.

River North 

River North is no longer the little kid on the block. Due to its beautiful location between the Loop and the river, River North is an area that virtually grew overnight. River North now has all the signs of being a self-sustaining neighborhood: green space, shopping, and nightlife. If you want to know what River North is all about, all you need to do is look at its proximity to everything. 

The Chicago Water Tower and Magnificent Mile are a short walk away, which gets you on the Lake Michigan shoreline in no time. The Loop and Streeterville are located to the north of River North as well, providing quick access to Union Station, Navy Pier, and Grant Park.

Humboldt Park 

Humboldt Park is a small neighborhood located on Chicago’s northwest side. It is mostly residential with a few commercial businesses near the intersection of North Avenue and Humboldt Boulevard. Humboldt Park has a close-knit community feel with walls made of brick and colorful doors. 

While there’s diverse population, the residents tend to hold on to their Latino culture due to the large number of Spanish speakers around. Sometimes referred to as the “Barrio”, families strive to make it their home year after year.

Garfield Park 

Garfield Park is a neighborhood on Chicago’s west side, occupying nearly the entire eastern half of West Garfield Park’s official city-designated community area. The backstory of the locality is central to understanding the neighborhood. Designed by Daniel Burnham, it was created, “for lovers of nature and pursuits of health” in 1868. It would become one of the most highly used gardens in the city.

Little Village 

Little Village is the heart of Mexican culture in Chicago. It’s affectionately known as “La Villita” by the locals after its sister city – La Villita, Mexico. 

The Little Village Neighborhood (AKA La Villita) is one of the oldest and most urban neighborhoods around. It’s not surprising since it is located near 12th street and Grand Avenue in between Ashland Avenue and Damen Avenue. It has been settled by Mexicans, Poles, Ukrainians, Italians, as well as a now-growing portion of Asian Americans.

Roscoe Village 

Roscoe Village is always in the news and it is not hard to see why. This lovely stretch of real estate is occupied by several medium-sized businesses, million-dollar homes as well as some of the most talked-about restaurants in the city. Take River Boat Tours and Lake Cruises

Kick-start your holiday in Chicago by taking in the grandeur of the city skyline. Art Institute of Chicago

The Art Institute of Chicago is a paradise for students and art lovers and was founded in 1879 as a museum as well as a school for fine arts. The institute’s permanent collection features almost 300,000 works by artists of all genres from across the world, including contemporary designs, installations, textiles, etc. Exhibits include intriguing artifacts from European armor, and interior designs and furnishings in Europe and America from the late 13th to early 20th centuries.

The institute is home to the greatest collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art collections outside Paris, as well as modern art masterpieces by artists like Monet, van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Jackson Pollock, Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Matisse. The most noteworthy possessions of the institute are Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, American Gothic by Grant Wood, and Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Chicago Pizza Tours

It can’t get better than a guided pizza tour while on holiday! For some fun things to do in Chicago, hop onto one of the guided bus tours of significant pizzerias as well as no-so-well-known local shops. The initiative, which started in 2009, was designed by local pizza lover Jonathan Porter.

Grant Park

Popularly known as Chicago’s front yard, Grant Park is a massive green space within the city where most of the items in your list of things to do in Chicago Il will get ticked off. Home to a lot of top Chicago attractions, Grant Park, is as popular among vacationers as it is among the locals. Millennium Park

One of the top Chicago attractions is Millennium Park, an award-winning space within Grant Park. If you are looking for innovative art, architecture, landscaping, an ice-skating rink, and much more, then Millennium Park is the place for you. Equally popular among locals and visitors, the top attractions at Millennium Park include the Crown Fountain, Cloud Gate, Lurie Garden, Haris Theatre, among others.

Navy Pier

Extending on Lake Michigan, the Navy Pier is a full package of entertainment with eat, drink, and play being its underlying theme. While visiting the Navy Pier, start with the rides on the Ferris wheel, the carousel, or the swing seat, and then head on to the Chicago Children’s Museum or the miniature golf course.

Other must-see stops at the Navy Pier include the multisensory Funhouse Maze and the Crystal Gardens botanical garden. While movie buffs can catch a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, shopaholics can go berserk at the shop stops on the Navy Pier premises. Navy Pier has some wonderful firework shows on summer evenings, so do not miss out on them if you are traveling in summer. No matter what time of the year it is, a day at Navy Pier will always feel like a festival.

Riverwalk

One of the best activities in Chicago is to take a walk along the 1.25-mile (2 km) pedestrian pathway along the Chicago River. Take some time out of the hectic sightseeing schedule and stroll along the Riverwalk as you get to know more about Chicago. The Riverwalk is built in a planned manner, with six blocks having different features. The blocks are Marina, Cove, River Theater, Water Plaza, and Jetty.

John Hancock Center

One of the most recognizable skyscrapers of Chicago, the John Hancock Center is a 1,128-feet (344 meters)-high tower on the Magnificent Mile at 875 North Michigan Avenue. The tower tapers at the top as it rises with a characteristic X-shaped bracing on the facade.

The tower is home to the 360 Chicago Observation Deck on the 94th floor along with the TILT. Quite popular, the rest of the building is a mix of residential apartments, a parking garage, retail, and office spaces, along with lounging and dining options.

Cloud Gate

One of the most distinguishing features of Chicago, the Cloud Gate, is located at the AT&T Plaza of the Millennium Park within Grant Park. This art installation is British artist Anish Kapoor’s first public outdoor work in the US. Popularly known as “Chicago Bean”, it is a 110-ton elliptical sculpture. The Cloud Gate at Millennium Park is inspired by liquid mercury and made from 168 highly polished stainless-steel plates, reflecting the famous Chicago skyline and the clouds above.

You can touch the mirror-like surface of the Cloud Gate and watch your image reflected from a number of perspectives. A concave chamber beneath the sculpture provides a ‘gate’ known as the ‘omphalos’. Enjoy the unique experience as you capture your multiple reflections through photos that will make memories forever.

Wrigley Field

When in Chicago, definitely visit places that Chicagonians treasure as part of their culture. And sports is one of the top items on this list for sure. Built in 1914, Wrigley Field is the home of the Major League Baseball franchise Chicago Cubs and the second-oldest MLB ballpark in the US.

Chicago Cultural Center

Richard H. Driehaus Museum

The Richard H Driehaus Museum is situated at the Nickerson Mansion, which was built in 1883 for banker Samuel M. Nickerson. The museum highlights art and architecture of the late 19th century until present day with a huge collection of artworks and several exhibitions that take place throughout the year. The museum is a fine blend of the original furnishings and modern decorative art of glazed tiles, onyx, stained glass, carvings, and marbles.

Maggie Daley Park

A recent addition to Grant Park, the Maggie Daley Park is named after a former first lady of Chicago. A favorite stop for family time and recreation, the park was opened in 2014. Especially if you are traveling with children, head to the quirky Play Garden, built in the spirit of Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, for some unlimited fun, invention, relaxation, exploration, and experimentation.

Buckingham Fountain

One of the largest in the world, the Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain, is located in Grant Park (a huge patch of green in the heart of Chicago) and a must-see on the list of places to visit in Chicago. Installed sometime around early 20th century, this is also said to one of the first ornamental fountains in the US.

A designated Chicago Landmark, it boasts of 133 jets that shoot water as high as 150 feet into the air. The Buckingham Fountain produces choreographed water displays for 20 minutes every hour. United Center

Is Chicago Bulls one of your favorite teams? Of course, you cannot be visiting Chicago and not stopping at the United Center. Holy Name Cathedral

Currently, the Holy Name Cathedral stands where its predecessor got burnt in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Another addition to Chicago’s architectural repertoire, is a Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral with intricate artwork and designs. DuSable Bridge

One of the most iconic features of Chicago as well as the world, the DuSable Bridge on the Chicago River is a movable bridge that allows boats to pass underneath. It is designed with a distinct Parisian style. The DuSable, which got its official name in 2010, is a double-deck bridge with Michigan Avenue and a lower lever service road.

It has decorations such as the towers and the plaques giving it an edge over other bridges in Chicago in terms of design. Unlike earlier, the bridge has a seasonal schedule for opening so that there is a minimum traffic disruption.

Crown Fountain

One of the most prominent features of Millennium Park, the Crown Fountain at Millennium Park, is another of Chicago’s famous public art collections. Designed by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, it is made of two 50-foot (15.24 meters) glass block towers facing each other across a reflecting pool.

The towers have LEDs installed in them and display faces of Chicago citizens, wherein water flows through an outlet to give an illusion of it coming out of their mouths. Besides the magnificent artwork, the spot is a bustling hub for family outings, especially for kids who enjoy a hoard of activities. Goose Island Beer Company

How about a guided trip to one of the top breweries of the country along with tasting some fresh brews? The Goose Island Beer Company is a big name in Chicago’s craft brewing industry and is known for brewing lagers, porters, IPAs, and saisons.

Founded by beer-lover John Hall in 1988, it offers visits and tastings at two of its breweries in Chicago — West Fulton Street and North Clybourn Avenue. Hour-long guided tours of the breweries will tell you the history of the company as well as the production process. At the end of the tour, you get to sample some of their latest creations. Now that sounds like some real holidaying!

Bohemian National Cemetery

They were founded in the late 19th century as a cemetery where people of Bohemia, Moravian and Slovakian descent could be buried without any restrictions. Currently, the cemetery is open to people of all races, nationalities, and religions. The property is also home to a crematorium/columbarium and the Masaryk Memorial Mausoleum. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery is a landmark destination in Chicago for its beautiful garden and soothing atmosphere.

Chicago Pedway

This is an underground pedestrian walkway covering 40 blocks in the Central Business District through tunnels as well as overhead footbridges. It is one of the fastest and easiest ways for pedestrians to commute within Chicago, especially during natural calamities.

The tunnels were built in the 1950s and expanded in the following decades. Once down there, you can check out the artwork adorning the walls of the tunnels. Several shops and restaurants dot all the tunnels so that you can stop by for some retail therapy and grab a bite.

Ping Tom Memorial Park

Ping Tom Park is an urban park in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood and a great place to spend a few hours with family and kids. Built with Chinese landscape design elements, the park is an initiative of the Chinatown community. It has a pagoda-style pavilion, bamboo gardens, and a fieldhouse (with a gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, meeting rooms, etc.) along with an athletic field, walking paths, and a boat house. It is named after prominent Chinatown businessman and civic leader Ping Tom.

The park is ideal for small gatherings while also being the venue for several events like music concerts, festivals, performances, and movie screenings. A dragon boat race tournament is organized by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce every summer.

Midway Plaisance Park

Take time out of your hectic itinerary for some ice skating at the Midway Plaisance Park. The facility has an ice-skating rink, a warming center, a trail, and multi-purpose fields, along with two winter gardens for some green patches.

You can enroll in ice skating lessons and play Rat Hockey with your kids or attend any of the ongoing events and festivals that take place throughout the year. The venue is a complete family destination with music concerts, movie screenings, skating competitions, et al.

Taste of Chicago Festival

If you happen to be in Chicago in July, do not miss the world’s largest food festival. Held every year in mid-July at Grant Park, the Taste of Chicago Festival offers free entry to everyone up for some lip-smacking food. The aim of starting the Taste of Chicago Festival was to showcase the diversity of Chicago’s dining scene.

Promontory Point

A prominent feature within Burnham Park in the Hyde Park neighborhood, the Promontory Point is a man-made peninsula extending into Lake Michigan. It was created from a landfill, is lined with large limestone blocks, and has a raised meadow with the lush greenery of trees and plantations. With its natural landscape, the Promontory Point barely gives away the feeling of being artificial.

The place is adorned by several public artwork and sculptures such as Sounding Bronzeville and La Ronda Parakata. The Promontory Point is a great spot for photoshoots and gatherings.

The 606

In Chicago, Illinois the Chinese settlers first arrived in the late 80s in the wake of the California Gold Rush and to work on the First Transcontinental Railroad around the 1870s. This drove the entire population of migrants eastward to Boston, New York, and Chicago. According to history, the current Chinatown in Chicago is not the original settlement neighborhood of early Chinese immigrants. Today, the Bock Building remains the only remnant of the old settlement.

Chinese American Veterans Memorial

Pui Tak Center

This is one of the top historical landmarks of Chinatown in Chicago. Dedicated to serving the Chinese Christians in the downtown of Chicago, this center was established by the Chinese Christian Union Church in 1993. Chinese Lunar New Year Parade

The Lunar New Year parade is one of the most iconic things to see in Chinatown, Chicago. The parade celebrates the Chinese culture in its full glory. The whole downtown decks up colorfully and walking through Wentworth Avenue till the Chinatown gateway is an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Dragon Boat Race @ Ping Tom Memorial Park

This is a 2000-year-old traditional sport and is still prevalent in the Chinese community. Every year this event is run by the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce in Ping Tom Memorial Park. The dragon boat race is a spectacle. A staggering 32 teams, each with 18 members, one drummer, and one flag catcher on a beautiful dragon boat is one of the top events that people so eagerly await to participate.

Nine Dragon Wall

Dragon in Chinese culture is hugely revered as a symbol of good fortune. The numeric nine signifies eternity. So, the Nine Dragon Wall is a symbol of the community’s wish to have long-lasting good fortune. This mural takes its inspiration from one of the walls in the famous Beihai Park in Beijing. This mural stands out as a model of superior craftsmanship depicting nine large dragons and 500 smaller dragons. This project has been funded by the Chamber of Commerce, and in terms of sculpture, this is one of the top attractions of Chicago.

What does The Bean mean?

The Bean’s reflective surface looks like liquid mercury floating in the structure. The shiny surface gives a beautiful manifestation of the people strolling around the park, the surrounding skyline, the lights of Michigan Avenue, and peace offered by the green space making it an unforgettable Millennium Park experience. Who designed The Bean?

The Bean was conceptualized and designed by Anish Kapoor, an internationally acclaimed Indian-born British sculptor who is renowned for his large-scale abstract projects with geometric shapes and reflective surfaces. Chicago’s Cloud Gate is Anish Kapoor’s first public outdoor sculpture in the United States. Though the structure was under construction during the inauguration of the park in 2004, this magical visual of a structure was finally completed in May 2006. You will admire the beauty of his design at the bottom of the sculpture, which is inspired by the Omphalos and is an indentation where the mirrored surface gives multiple reflections of any object situated under it.

What’s The Bean made out of?

The exterior of The Bean is made up of stainless steel giving it the sharp and shiny look. The massive structure is designed using computer technology to achieve the perfection of cutting and assembling 168 steel plates. The steel plates are fitted and welded together for a seamless finish. From inside, it is a grid of two large metal rings connected through a truss framework, like what you might see on a bridge. Its steel exterior is attached to a frame situated inside with flexible connectors that allows it to expand and contract with the weather changes. This thoughtful design allows the sculpture’s enormous weight to be borne by its two base points, giving it the iconic “Bean” shape and creating a sizeable concave area beneath the structure allowing the visitors to walk beneath it.

How big is The Bean?

It is huge! This massive structure located at the prominent location of Chicago is 66 feet in length, 42 feet wide, and touches a total height of 33 feet, making this edifice the best of its kind. It undoubtedly is a gigantic piece of art. A unique and thoughtful design, its 12 feet (3.7 meters) high arch allows the visitors to walk underneath it, giving them a memorable experience that they will cherish for life.

Why is it called The Bean?

It was immediately after the unveiling of this extraordinary shape of this architectural marvel and even before an official name was assigned; the people of Chicago started calling this reflective steel sculpture as ‘The Bean’.  As 80% of its surface reflected the Chicago sky that eventually took the shape of the structure and amalgamated into it, this mesmerizing piece of art was rightly named ‘Cloud Gate’.
