Birth Home of Martin Luther King Jr.
At 501 Auburn Avenue in the Sweet Auburn historic district is the house where Martin Luther King Jr., the Civil rights activist, was born and resided for the first 12 years of his life.
Dating back to 1895 and set a block away from the Kings’ Ebenezer Baptist Church, this house was occupied by King Sr. and Alberta Williams after they married in 1926.
Free tours of this impeccably preserved property of King’s house are given by National Park Service rangers. But keep in mind that you’ll need to get here as early as possible in the day; the tour groups are limited to just 15 people and fill up on a first-come, first-served basis.
If the tour is all booked by chance and you can’t get inside, there are loads of information shared by the volunteers along the street.

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park
The pride of Atlanta and the United States, this park is a memorial to one of the most influential figures in history, Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park. It is also A National historic site. Most of the Atlanta tours take you on a guided tour to the home where Martin Luther King, Jr. was born and raised. The Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was once a pastor, and the King Center, where you’ll find engaging exhibits on the civil rights movement and King’s gravesite, are a few of the landmarks you can cover in this tour. Keep a reasonable amount of time dedicated to this place only.
Also, remember to wear comfy shoes since the entire complex is spread across several city blocks.

Georgia Aquarium
The Georgia Aquarium is rated as one of the largest aquariums in the world. It is supposed to be the only attraction outside of Asia to hold the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. Don’t forget to attend the whale shark talks by the knowledgeable staff that takes place every day to understand this species. This is fun stuff to do in Atlanta when you are traveling with children. Another favorite member of this aquarium is the Beluga Whale.
Today, the Georgia Aquarium boasts more than 100,000 animals from 700 species represented in seven different galleries. Some diverse species include freshwater animals, a whale shark, southern sea otters, California sea lions, green sea turtles, big-bellied seahorses, and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish like surgeonfish, Silver Moonies, and sailfin tangs. The Ocean Voyager exhibit that contains a six-million-gallon whale shark tank and the free Dolphin Show are extremely popular tourist attractions, so don’t be surprised if you see huge crowds flocking around these habitats.
Apart from these, you have the 4D theatre shows for your amusement and the wonderful touch pools that let you touch and feel a live cownose ray. You will no longer be wondering what to in Atlanta once you visit the lively area.

World of Coca-Cola
Did you know that the world’s favorite soft drink, Coca-Cola, was first invented here in Atlanta? Yes, you heard it right. In 1886, John Stith Pemberton first started the Coca-Cola company here, which went on to become a legacy of its own. First opened in 1990, the World of Coca-Cola celebrates the same legacy and the global phenomenon and the world’s most recognizable brand.
This World of Coca-Cola has exhibits that allow you to create your potion. Another exhibit, the “Bottle Works”, has huge displays of the equipment and processes followed in a real Coca-Cola bottling plant. Another interesting exhibit is “In Search of the Secret Formula”, which is an exciting and innovative multi-sensory 4D movie experience. It lets you understand and learn the origins of Coca-Cola’s 130-year-old recipe and how Coca-Cola has managed to keep its recipe hidden from its competitors.

Atlanta Botanical Garden
Visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden for its beautiful, lush green and unique set of gardens. Amazingly spread over 30 acres, this park in the northwest corner of Midtown’s Piedmont Park has a huge variety of unique orchids in the Fuqua Orchid Center, rare plants and trees in the Lou Glenn Children’s Garden, the Edible Garden, the Tropical Rotunda. Particularly interesting is the rare and colorful collection of poison dart frogs that stay within the Fuqua Conservatory’s glass walls.
It is an excellent way to spend an entire day seeing and doing everything this ‘magical’ locale has to offer.

High Museum of Art
If you think that you’re a true devotee of art and culture, you’d love a tour of the High Museum of Art, one of the leading art museums in the city. It is located in the Woodruff Arts Center. National Center for Civil and Human Rights

Jimmy Carter Library & Museum
The Jimmy Carter Library and Museum chronicles Jimmy Carter’s life, as the 39th President of the United States (1977-81) and his work to fight racism and poverty. Arabia Mountain
The Arabia Mountain has farmland, lakes, hiking trails, and a nature preserve spread over more than 2,000 acres. The hike to the Arabia mountain is not long but moderately steep. Swan House
Swan House is an extravagant house built in 1928 for Edward and Emily Inman, heirs to a cotton brokerage fortune. The architecture represents the Renaissance-inspired flourishes, whereas the terraced gardens are in a formal Baroque style. You will find the swan motif visible in all the magnificent rooms and hence the name. Every you look, extravagance speaks.

Trap Music Museum
For a fan of trap music, this needs to go up high on the list while visiting Atlanta. Although the museum is small, it has a lot of interesting pictures and photo ops of the beloved trap artists from all over the country. It is a really nice experience to see how the museum pays homage to the life of local trap artists such as Ti with a space of their own.

Inman Park
Inman Park is a beautiful town neighborhood on the east side of Atlanta and the first planned suburb. It was named for Samuel M. Inman. Inman is famous for some of the most architecturally and historically fabulous homes here.
But just being home to beautiful homes is not what Inman park all about. Once you start exploring, you will come across a lot of history in and around Inman Park, such as the beautiful Twin Houses of the Dames, the Battle of Atlanta, Coca Cola Moguls, and many more. People of this city have made great efforts to preserve and maintain everything, especially the homes.
Visitors have recommended visiting the Inman Park festival during summer and taking a walking tour around the streets to see the houses’ beautiful architecture. There is a beautiful park where you can relax and enjoy the summer sun.

Stone Mountain Park
Stone Mountain Park is a huge area of 3,200 acres proud of its huge diversity of family-friendly attractions.
Look out for the Confederate Memorial Carving with carvings of three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.
Suppose the history of the carvings doesn’t excite you. In that case, you can visit Stone Mountain Park for additional attractions that include a wildlife preserve, a cable car ride, two golf courses, several restaurants, and an antebellum plantation that is open to tour.
Enjoy the day with some astounding recreational attractions, hiking trails, or a picnic, and stay till sundown to witness the Lasershow Spectacular that lights up the mountain’s carving and the night sky with images representing the South. Stone Mountain Park is undoubtedly one of the most fun places to visit in Atlanta.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve is a beautiful getaway right in the middle of the town. Tucked away off Old Alabama Road, the main entrance sign says ‘Come Take A Hike’. This preserve is great for families and solo visitors. It is educational and a must-do with your children as well.

Center for Puppetry Arts
A must-do for Jim Henson and Muppets fans, the Center for Puppetry Arts, is recognized worldwide to preserve and celebrate puppets. You can find great entertainment in the puppetry classes, attend live shows, and movies like “The Muppets Take Manhattan”. But the main attraction of this center lies in its indigenous museum.
The museum is home to a huge collection of catalogs surrounding the history of puppetry in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa, along with the entire collection dedicated to Jim Henson’s work.

Oakland Cemetery
If you are a history buff, the Oakland Cemetery, located about two miles from downtown Atlanta, is one of the best places to go in Atlanta. Historic and nostalgic at the same time, the cemetery is a reminder of the role Atlanta played during the Civil Rights movement. It stands as a testament to the city’s role in the Civil War and the civil rights movement.
But 70,000 graves are not all that you find here. The beautifully maintained cemetery has intricate sculptures, and the Confederate Memorial section has an impressive collection of art and architecture and carvings of the whole cemetery. Here, you can find graves of some famous personalities like golfer Bobby Jones and author Margaret Mitchell.

Sweetwater Creek State Park
Sweetwater Creek State Park provides a beautiful escape from the hustle-bustle of the city and gives you a chance to slow down, catch a breath, and enjoy the finer things in life. This park is located just outside Atlanta’s perimeter on the Western side; you can come and relax with a book in hand and some snacks for a picnic with your family.
Spanning over 2500 acres of gorgeous creekside landscape, you can catch a run alongside nine miles of streaming whitewater, sandy shores, lush green forest, wildflowers, animals, and nature.
Interestingly enough, if you follow a wooded trail from the Sweetwater Creek State Park, you can find yourself among the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company. This textile mill had burned down during the Civil War.

Georgia Governor’s Museum
Wondering what to do in Atlanta? Visit the Georgia Governor’s Mansion, which serves as the central residence for the presiding governor and first lady of Georgia. Built in 1968, the Georgia Governor’s Mansion is located on West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta, Georgia. Kennesaw Mountain
Kennesaw Battlefield Park preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign and also contains Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw Mountain is a mountain ridge between Marietta and Kennesaw, Georgia, with a summit elevation of 1,808 feet or 551 meters. It is the highest point in the core (urban and suburban) metro Atlanta area.
Although this is renowned as a Civil War battlefield when the battle took place, Kennesaw Mountain has a much richer history. A place of great historical significance, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was fought on June 27, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War.
This major frontal assault was launched by Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman against the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, ending in a tactical defeat for the Union forces.

Marietta Fire Museum
Marietta Museum is one of a kind of heritage museum that was formed in 1854 following a massive fire that destroyed most of Marietta Square. You will discover the firefighting techniques and unique equipment used from the 1800s to the present. Silver Comet Trail
One of the best places to visit in Atlanta, the Silver Comet is set in Atlanta’s heart. It has a great trail to ride bikes or just go walking. This trail is named after the famed Silver Comet passenger train that navigated the same designated route from the years 1947 to 1969. Atlanta Monetary Museum
Atlanta Fed’s Monetary Museum has lots of engaging multimedia displays on money and banking history in the United States. Not only that, but the museum also goes into detail on the role of the Federal Reserve on the U.S. economy. Various exhibits are interactive to make it more fun and educational such as the robots taking money cases in and out of the huge vault and watching workers sort the money.
It was also interesting to see how damaged notes are shredded and how money is being transported inside the Reserve Bank. In the end, as you exit the exhibit, you can take a sample of the packet of shredded money. Overall, it’s fascinating to visit with children.
