At times they would want to go on a rollercoaster ride; other times, they might fancy camping and hiking on a mountain! Crissy Field

Earlier an airfield, this place is currently a campground at the beach with panoramic views of the sea and the mountains in the distance.  It was restored and opened to the public in 2001, and since then, it has managed to be everyone’s favorite spot to visit.  

It lies well within the city limits and is a perfect spot for a leisurely family camping trip. It gives a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and is easy to access. Not just tourists, it is equally loved by the locals, who come here to spend time with nature. Disney California Adventure

Located near Disneyland, Disney California Adventure is a theme park that has seven different themed areas. One of the most famous rides at the Disney California Adventure, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, is a 360-degree rollercoaster ride that takes you on a loop.  

Several restaurants at Disney California Adventure will satiate all your hunger pangs as well. Living Desert

Not just an ordinary zoo, the Living Desert is a conservation site that gives the children an experience of being close to wildlife. It is divided into two sections, Africa and North America. It is home to hundreds of animals such as camels, cheetahs, giraffes, and various other exotic species.  

If your children are adventurous, they can also take a ride on a camel and feed a giraffe. To take a view of the entire park, you can use the shuttle service and then stop wherever you wish to.

Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park is a place that preserves the unique biodiversity of the state. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway along the sandy beaches and the hills. It has historic cottages for you to spend time at and a diverse range of wildlife for your children to explore.

Golden Gate Bridge

The most-loved icon in all of California is more than just a scenic view of the Sacramento River and imposing mountains. It also offers a valuable insight into the history of the city. The bridge’s height is 746 feet (227.4 meters), and it is about a mile (1.6 kilometers) wide.  

You can take a walk, ride a bike, or even enjoy a boat ride under the bridge for a different kind of viewing experience altogether. Visiting the state and not visiting the Golden Gate Bridge with your children sounds like an unfair deal. It is one of those things to do with kids in California that will instill a sense of awe in children.

Griffith Observatory

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island in the middle of the sea was built as a federal prison. It is located about 1.25 miles (2.01 km) offshore from San Francisco. Though it is a small island, it holds the long history of America’s struggle for justice.

Sequoia National Park

Long Beach Aquarium

TCL Chinese Theater

Take a tour of the USS Hornet

Grunion Run 

Don’t worry if you have not heard of something called a Grunion. They are a fascinating species of fish, about five to six inches long, silver in color, that leave the water at night and come on the beaches throughout the Southern part during the spring and summer months.  

You can visit the beaches to spot them but remember these are seasonal. To pick the Grunion, you will need a California fishing license which is given to individuals above the age of 16 only. The state is known for Grunion, and visiting here with your kids will become a memory that the kids will definitely remember for decades to come.

Calico Ghost Town

Calico was a former mining town back in 1881 abandoned in the 1890s, which led it to become a ghost town. This ghost town was later purchased by Walter Knott in the 1950s and was architecturally restored. However, he chose to keep five buildings the same as they were in the 1880s.  

Today, Calico stands as a country park and is visited by several tourists from across the globe. It also offers a range of recreational activities, such as off-roading, hiking, and camping.

Talking about day trips from San Francisco, do not miss Carmel-by-the-sea. This sleepy, romantic beach town is just over two hours’ drive south of the city. Carmel-by-the-sea is famous for its old-town ambiance, fairytale-like cottages, and art galleries.

Sebastopol 

A laid-back town in Sonoma County, Sebastopol is worth visiting for its charm and surprises. Once a predominantly apple-growing area, it now has many vineyards and wineries as well.  

You can have delicious food, shop for rare antiques, visit local farms, and go golfing, hiking, or biking here. Florence Avenue displays imaginative and colorful pieces of art made using recycled trash.

Silicon Valley

Big Sur

The drive to Big Sur, through Highway 1, along the Pacific Coast is breathtaking. Big Sur also offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking.

Point Reyes 

You can reach Point Reyes by driving for just over an hour from the city. So, this is ideal for a day trip. This beautiful national preserve is a popular tourist attraction, and it is home to over 1,500 species of plants and animals.  

You can hike your way up to the edge to witness the ocean crashing against the rocks, and you can also watch the majestic elks at the Tule Elk Preserve. While Point Reyes Station is a small cozy town nearby, Point Reyes National Seashore has many beaches to explore.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk 

This two-hour ride can be considered one of the best weekend trips from San Francisco. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk welcomes you with California’s oldest amusement park.  

The park has a number of options for those who love thrill rides. The Boardwalk extends to the picturesque Monterey Bay and also leads to the Main Beach, where you can swim or paddleboard.

Marin Headlands 

The Marin Headlands is a very short drive away and one of the best day trips from San Francisco. It is a hilly peninsula located just north of the city, at the southernmost end of Marin County in California.

The city of Berkeley is home to the University of California. It is the first campus of the University of California and is ranked among the top universities in the world.

The coastline has some gorgeous beaches, while the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary lets you enjoy an area full of marine biodiversity.

The Palo Alto Art Center, Frenchman’s Tower, Packard’s garage, the Stanford Shopping Center, and the Baylands Nature Preserve are some of the top attractions. Besides, it is home to many amazing parks too.  However, staying close to all these sites is quite challenging, for the cost of living here is exceptionally steep owing to steep rent. In fact, as of 2021, the median home price in Palo Alto stands at a whopping $3.1 million.

Davis 

Situated to the west of Sacramento, Davis is the most populous city in Yolo County despite being relatively smaller than others over here. It’s perhaps best recognized for being home to the famous United States Bicycling Hall of Fame. This museum educates visitors on America’s rich cycling legacy. 

Pleasant weather, peaceful family-oriented neighborhoods, a stable job scene, and a host of bright spots make it one of the best places to live in Cali. The rate of violent crimes is 56% lower than the national average. This figure validates the resounding safety of its communities.  

Moreover, Davis also boasts of brilliant educational facilities, with the University of California, Davis leading the pack, of course. On account of it being a college town, bicycling is one of the most popular modes of transportation. The cost of living here is a touch higher than the national average, but it is worth noting here that this is primarily due to the steep median housing rates in the region.

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach in Southern California might well be small, but an abundance of recreational facilities and top-notch schools and colleges make it one of the most livable cities over here. Along with Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, also known as the “Pearl of LA’s South Bay,” is one of the three beach cities within the South Bay region of Los Angeles Country. 

Many people recognize Manhattan Beach by its long beach that stretches 2.1 miles long and 450 feet wide. The crime rates in Manhattan are 25% below the national average, which further strengthens its case as a city worth residing in.  

At the same time, however, Manhattan Beach’s extremely high cost of living – both in terms of above-average property rent and purchase price makes matters rather challenging for many interested prospects, which perhaps reflects in Manhattan Beach’s small population. Rest assured, if you’re able to accommodate the rent with your income, the benefits that it showers on you are next to none. Manhattan Beach, at present, is home to multiple celebrities and other high-profile individuals, and that in itself speaks volumes about this place’s desirability.

Sacramento

If you’re moving into California on a tight budget, you can make Sacramento your hometown. Famous for its museums, river views, and food, the town of Sacramento provides you with a ton of affordable property options to choose from. Subsequently, the town’s low cost of living and growing job market secure its place among the fastest-growing regions in California. Primarily because the median property rent is well within the countrywide average. Its average household income is fairly reasonable too. 

While Sacramento’s cultural scene might not rub shoulders with Los Angeles and San Francisco’s, it is recognized for its evolving contemporary culture. It is frequently dubbed by many to be the place’s most “hipster” town. It has a thriving wine and beer scene, and if you ask us, that complements Sacramento’s aesthetic of tree-lined streets really well.

Los Angeles

Now, Los Angeles doesn’t need much of an introduction, does it? Home to Hollywood, Los Angeles holds the reputation for making destinies as munificently as notoriously it breaks them apart. That is perhaps why it is termed as many as the “City of Dreams.” However, Hollywood is just scraping at the surface of Los Angeles. California’s arguably most recognized (as well as its most populous) city packs much more for you to behold.  

There are plenty of activities here. For starters, this place is the proud owner of a truly international (and absolutely lip-smacking!) food scene. Few will dare to compete with LA’s vibrance and grandeur on the cultural spectrum. And to cap it off, Los Angeles is also home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet should you want to tune off from the entertainment and be at one with nature. 

Of course, Los Angeles’ immense popularity and reputation mean that it is relatively expensive to lead a life over here. While traditionally, Los Angeles has been plagued with alarmingly high crime rates. That, however, has never affected the average property rent in the area. In fact, Los Angeles has had the largest decline in crimes of any major American city. The median home value in Los Angeles is quite steep.

San Jose

Besides being recognized as the capital of the famed Silicon Valley that houses the who’s who of the tech world like Adobe, IBM, Cisco Systems, and eBay, California’s third-most populous city is also known for its pleasing Mediterranean climate thoroughly delightful entertainment options. However, despite its charm and glow, many people cannot make San Jose their home, owing primarily to its extremely high cost of living. 

While San Jose does everything in its power to foster your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, it is not as kind towards your financial health. San Jose’s median home price stands at a lofty $1,085,000, which is way above the national average, making it the country’s most expensive property market. However, San Jose’s average household income is on the higher side too. San Jose’s most popular communities are Rose Garden, Midtown San Jose, Blossom Valley, Mayfair, Santa Teresa, Almaden Valley, Japantown, and Silver Creek Valley. 

San Jose also has a pretty impressive art scene and is the home of multiple performing arts companies, including Symphony Silicon Valley, Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose, Opera San Jose, and the San Jose Repertory Theater. San Jose is also known for its impressive repertoire of top-notch schools and colleges. Redlands 

Located in San Bernardino County in southern California, the town of Redlands is characterized majorly by many majestic late-1800s buildings like the Morey Mansion, A.K. Smiley Public Library, and the Kimberly Crest House & Gardens.  

What makes Redlands a sought-after place for residence is its affordable housing options. At $1155, the average rent prices here are perched just a notch above the national average of $928. Additionally, this town boasts of many excellent schools and colleges, which reflects in the high education levels of its native residents. 

Communities here are predominantly family-oriented thanks to the Redlands’ low crime rates, dense suburban environment, and bustling downtown. Besides its immaculately preserved historic buildings, the town hosts a slew of other attractions, such as the Redlands Bowl, Escape Craft Brewery, Historical Glass Museum, and the Lincoln Memorial Shrine.

Mill Valley 

A slightly costlier than the average yet stable housing market, great amenities, and a highly safe environment make the Mill Valley one of the best places to live in California. Mill Valley also has a small population.

Mill Valley is chock full of charming restaurants, arresting galleries, and cozy shops, making wandering around its streets an utterly delightful affair. If you’re fond of walking, strolling through Throckmorton Avenue and its side streets in Mill Valley’s downtown area are guaranteed to leave you thoroughly enchanted.  

Mill Valley has plenty of activities. It contains some mighty impressive art galleries, all of which are open for public viewing. Its most famous galleries are Seager Grey Gallery, Desta Gallery, and Robert Green Fine Arts. The Throckmorton Theater, popular for hosting plays, comedy shows, and concerts, is an institution you can consider visiting to spend your evenings and weekends. The cost of living in this idyllic hamlet, though, is a little steep along with its median property prices, so we’d advise you to keep one eye on your wallet before you finalize your relocation to Mill Valley.

Santa Rosa 

Situated in the North Bay region of the Bay Area, Santa Rosa is the largest and most important city in California’s splendid Wine Country and Redwood Coast. Yes, that means all of the state’s finest vineyards and wineries are but a short drive away! 

What appeals to most people about Santa Rosa is its relaxed environment, which provides ample scope to lead a relatively peaceful and quiet life. Santa Rosa is replete with a host of attractive shopping centers, plenty of activities, delightful restaurants, amazing parks, and several high-end amenities. On top of it all, Santa Rosa is blessed with a warm-summer Mediterranean climate which essentially means that you won’t ever have to think twice before stepping out.  

The cost of living in Santa Rose is above average, it is rather steep, and it reflects in its median property rates that lie miles above the national average. So, there might be a good chance that you might have to cut costs on other aspects of your lifestyle in order to accommodate the median rent. Santa Rosa’s population is small compared to the other entries in this list.  Some of the notable local attractions over here are the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center (built to honor the legacy of the creator of the famous Peanuts comics, who spent the latter half of his life here), Spring Lake Regional Park, and Redwood Empire Ice Arena among others.

Santa Monica 

Located west of downtown Los Angeles, the beautiful coastal city of Santa Monica is easily one of the best places to settle down over here. Located in California’s Sacramento County, Folsom is acknowledged by many people as among the most livable cities in the state. Vallejo 

The beautiful waterfront city of Vallejo in California is not just Solano County’s largest city but also the tenth most populous in the San Francisco Bay Area. Vallejo draws its name from the renowned Californio general and statesman Don Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who was also among the first members of the California State Senate. 

Although many things make Vallejo an excellent place to live in, the two things that stand out are its mild, coastal Mediterranean climate and favorable cost of living median property prices.

Little Tokyo

As the name indicates, Little Tokyo, located in the heart of downtown LA, is where you’d go to get a taste of space culture. From shopping to eating, or even simply sightseeing, Little Tokyo packs enough attractions to keep you occupied for an afternoon or two. Declared as a National Historic Landmark District in 1995, Little Tokyo also plays host to the annual Nisei Week festival.

The Movie Famous “Bradbury Building” 

Blade Runner fans, here’s an interesting nugget of trivia for you. Do you recall the zigzag staircases from the movie’s iconic climax? Well, those staircases are a part of the Bradbury building in downtown LA.  However, that is not this building’s sole claim to fame. Bradbury building is also recognized as the oldest commercial building of this residential district.

Though the wood, brick, and iron framework of this building are rather nondescript, there is something inexplicably endearing about the rustic appeal of this place.  Sure, you won’t be able to use its old elevators, but you are always free to scale some of its staircases and marvel at the stunning architecture of the Bradbury building.

Angels Flight 

Operating since 1901, the Angels Flight Railway is hands down among the major downtown LA attractions. The Staples Center is one of the great tourist landmarks of Downtown LA. If you have time in your hands, then you must book a ticket for either a sports event or a musical. Zuma Beach County Park lies to the west of Point Dume and has a long shoreline of 3 miles. This popular beach attracts many travelers and tourists, and it is particularly crowded during the summer months.

Abalone Cove Shoreline Park

Will Rogers State Beach 

Located strategically between Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica Bay, Will Rogers State Beach is a great place to spend time with your special someone. You can either enjoy a romantic sunset or spend time sunbathing here.  

Will Rogers State Beach is also a place for destination weddings. Lifeguards patrol the area continuously during the day when visitors come to swim, dive, or surf.

Leo Carrillo State Park 

Among the many beaches in Los Angeles, Leo Carrillo State Park is a spot with ecological diversity. You can see rocky crags simply jutting into the ocean.

Redondo Beach 

What makes Redondo Beach city famous and different from the other beach cities is its unique pier, which is horseshoe-shaped.

Huntington Beach 

Some of the most beautiful beaches and best waves of Southern California can be experienced in Huntington Beach. The area is also the surfing capital of the region.

Playa Del Rey 

Playa Del Rey Beach in Los Angeles is among the least crowded beaches in LA. It extends to quite a few miles.

Municipal Rose Garden

Los Gatos Creek Trail

The Los Gatos Creek Trail is a 4.1-mile-long paved path connecting San Jose and Campbell in Santa Clara County. The trail extends from the north end of the Los Gatos Creek pedestrian bridge eastward to Winchester Avenue in Campbell just west of Interstate 280. There are many things to do while visiting the trail. Just off the southern stretch of State Route 85 in San Jose is one of the county’s most scenic spots, the Almaden Quicksilver County Park. The Park, a former mining site, now offers visitors beautiful scenic views of rolling hills and ponds featuring endangered species of flora and fauna. Almaden Quicksilver County Park is one of the popular San Jose attractions for nature enthusiasts.  If you like waterfalls and beautiful trails, then you must go here. The hike is short and not too hard, but the journey is absolutely worth it!

Kelley Park 

Located in the hills south of Downtown San Jose, Kelley Park is a gorgeous place to hike and spend the day with friends and family. It’s one of the largest parks of the Silicon Valley along the Coyote Creek. The park has innumerable trails that wind through shady groves, tall grasses, rocky hills, and Disc Golf. With 172 acres of vast landscape, Kelley Park offers a place for hosting special events such as weddings. Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph 

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph is a must-visit. This beautiful church is located in downtown San Jose and was built using a French design. The Computer History Museum (CHM) is a historical organization and museum in Mountain View, California that maintains an extensive collection of computer related artifacts. The San Jose Museum of Art has a variety of exhibits worth checking out. If you are an art lover, the museum is a must visit spot in downtown San Jose. The current exhibit titled “Contemporary Masters from the Thannhauser Collection,” features the works of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, and Vincent van Gogh. This is a great place to take pictures because they allow you to use your flash. There is also a beautiful outdoor estate with fountains where you can relax and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. The San Jose Jazz Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in Northern California and a highlight of the year. Shoreline Lake Park 

One of the most beautiful and serene spots in San Jose is Shoreline Lake Park. This destination is not only gorgeous but full of history and fun activities for the kids. Skyline Boulevard

One of the most amazing San Jose things to do, this destination packs in a punch. It’s a little-known fact that Silicon Valley has an incredible skyline. The San Jose Flea Market is one of the most popular and largest flea markets in California. Museum of Quilts & Textiles 

With a mission to promote the appreciation of the American art of fabrics, the Museum of Quilts & Textiles is a destination that you don’t want to miss if you are in San Jose. The destination is home to more than 8,000 fabrics. Among its collection are remarkable works of art bequeathed by generous donors, such as the Latin American fabrics collected by architect Eric Mendelsohn.

Lick Observatory

Lick Observatory is the San Francisco Bay Area’s best kept secret and a must visit for locals and tourists alike. No trip to San Jose, CA is complete without making a stop at the Lick Observatory. The Lick Observatory, atop Mt. Ed R. Levin County Park 

Ed R. Levin County Park is a large estate that extends from the north side of Waverly Avenue south to the Alameda Creek Trail at Coyote Creek. It encompasses a wide variety of terrain and vegetation making it feel like several parks in one environment. The estate has several trails that are just short hikes, but the loop trail lets you see most of what the estate has to offer with moderate difficulty. 

There are dirt jumps, single track trails, and even a pump track for you to try out your skills on your free day. The garden is mostly shaded and makes for good riding on those hot days where all you want to do is enjoy some fresh air and a little exercise. Fun fact: Before European settlers moved into the area, this land served as hunting grounds for the local Miwok people.

Triton Museum of Art 

Visiting the Triton Museum of Art is a must in San Jose, California. Located within walking distance of SAP Center and Downtown Silicon Valley, it’s easily accessible from anywhere in the city and offers free admission to the public daily. This museum is built around the historic Nourse monument which is a ​​registered National Historic Landmark.

Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge 

Located in Fremont, just past Sunol Regional Wilderness and Donner Creek is the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Covering almost 30,000 acres (120 km²), the bay is an expansive body of water teeming with marshland flora and fauna.

Gualala 

Gualala is one of the most popular towns in Mendocino County. A major draw for tourists is Gualala’s access to the coastline and the ocean and its proximity to hiking trails. 

Gualala is an unincorporated community of 400 people on the Pacific coast in Mendocino County, California. It is located mainly on the east bank of the Gualala River and on a hill about 200 ft (61 m) above the river at an elevation of 56 feet (17 m). 

Due to its location as a stop between Fort Bragg and Point Arena, it has been known variously as Langdon’s, Popcorn’s, and Semple’s until 1874 when the name was changed to Gualala, derived from the neighboring native village name.

Sausalito 

Sausalito is a beautifully small and picturesque town in Marin County, California. It is known for being home to the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a cute shopping district with many small boutique shops and restaurants. Sausalito has the best weather and views during the summer months compared with the surrounding towns. The architecture of homes and businesses is beautiful and unique and adds to its charm. 

This unincorporated community offers a great selection of restaurants, waterfront views, and plenty to see and do. It is just across the bay from San Francisco (about a 15-minute ferry ride) are its world-famous boatsheds in a spectacular setting. Lying at the end of the San Francisco region, with a population of 4,000 people, this small city offers a surprising array of attractions.

Monterey 

Monterey is located on the central coast of California, just north of Big Sur. It’s about 90 minutes south of San Jose and slightly longer depending on where in San Jose you live. Leisure travelers are often drawn to Monterey for its stunning coastline, great restaurants, and stunning location between the Santa Lucia mountains and the beckoning Pacific Ocean.

Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the headlands of the California coast. Its ocean side setting is exquisite but it has never been sought out for tourism. Bodega Bay is not a typical California beach town that is filled with surfers, tourists, and sunbathers. The people who live here like it that way. There are only about 3,000 residents in Bodega Bay and 60% of them are over age 62. 

Bodega Bay is located on California’s gorgeous beachline, just north of San Francisco. Ample accommodations provide something for everyone, from ocean view cottages to tranquil vacation rentals and private beach access. This beautiful town makes the perfect destination for a weekend beach getaway or full-on vacay by the side of the beach.

Calistoga

If you’re looking for places in California that have a special charm about them or are just far enough removed from a major city to make you feel away, Calistoga is just the spot. Calistoga, the city of natural hot springs that sits in the Napa Valley region of Northern California, is a remarkable tourist destination. The hot springs are the centerpiece of this city, even though there are many attractions for visitors.  

Calistoga, a quiet town full of wine and relaxation, is also home to some amazing restaurants and hotels. The location is just right with the Napa County Fairgrounds, which hosts the Napa County Fair held in the last week of July. Half Moon Bay 

Half Moon Bay, CA is an iconic coastal town, located approximately 20 miles south of San Francisco. It attracts both locals and visitors alike, and with all that the area has to offer, it’s easy to see why. It is a great town and one of the best places to visit if you’re looking for somewhere quiet, safe, and joyous.

Santa Cruz 

Santa Cruz is a natural treasure found at the tip of the San Lorenzo Valley, less than a stone’s throw from the Santa Clara Valley of California. It is situated on the shores of Monterey Bay, an ocean-side that signifies its connection to the Largest Marine Sanctuary in the world. 

This amazing California city, with an estimated population of 60,526 people and covering 48 square miles of land (as of 2008), is situated in the extremely beautiful Monterey Bay on its side to the Pacific Ocean. It is totally worth a visit with so much on offer.  

Don’t miss the Yosemite National Park, which is just 40 miles northeast, and San Francisco, only 35 miles northeast of Santa Cruz. Even if you simply stay in the city itself for a night or two while you are in California, you will find that it is quite nice and very historic.

Eureka 

Eureka is full of quaint shops, delicious restaurants, and fantastic little independent stores. It’s no wonder that so many visitors and locals love this coastal community. Eureka is known for its seaside location, redwood trees, and vast Californian countryside. It’s also known as the official northern gateway to Redwood State and National Parks and a great starting point for exploring this wonderful spot. 

Eureka was founded on mining and agriculture and is home to the renowned redwoods. After visiting Eureka, you may want to tour some nearby small towns in Northern California including Arcata, Fortuna, Rio Dell, and Ferndale. Sonora 

Sonora is the county seat of Tuolumne County, California. It is surrounded by rolling hills and the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. Native Americans used to roam over these hills before the Spanish came and settled here. 

You can still see evidence of their presence incorporated into the city’s layout of wide, tree-lined streets that curve around open spaces. Sonora’s picturesque location attracts a diverse group of residents eager to live in such a lovely spot. 

If you’re looking for a small town in California that is surrounded by forests, mountains, and rivers then Sonora could be the spot for you.

Lakeport 

Lakeport on Clear Lake is located in California’s Lake County. The small city was founded in 1850 by Captain John Stone. The 2010 census population was 10,941, down from 11,153 at the 2000 census. 

In 1859, gold was discovered at Poverty Bar and other spots in the foothills of the Coast Range mountains south of Lakeport, leading to the large-scale immigration of prospectors and businessmen. 

Two block-long fireproof brick buildings were erected in 1852 to house the Commercial Bank and the Union Trust Company in Downtown Lakeport, the center of all activities. These buildings are still standing in today.

Murphys 

If you were to pick just one town in Northern California that did it all, had it all, and made all the right choices throughout its history, you’d be hard pressed to find a better example than Murphys. This gem of a town has managed to balance local history with innovative new approaches to dining, entertainment, and lodging. The people are friendly and extremely welcoming.  

If you’re looking for a small, casual vibe, Murphys might be the spot for you. It may be just a little south of Yosemite, but is still in reach of everything beautiful and relaxing about the state.

Aptos 

Positioned right on the Little Sur River, Aptos is a real estate haven. Tucked away for decades into dense forest lands and undersea canyons, Aptos is only an hour away from the bustling city. 

Aptos has many advantages. The ocean, the rain forests, the mountains, the golf courses and fishing spots, all are a short distance away from Aptos. Even closer is a gorgeous canyon that draws thousands of visitors annually with its beauty. 

Small towns in Northern California aren’t all about a chance to win some of the largest corporations on the West Coast. For starters, there are plenty of cost-effective choices that provide just as much appeal as their larger-than-life counterparts.

St. Helena 

St. Helena is one of those small towns in Northern California that will surprise you. Nestled between Napa Valley and Sonoma, St. Helena blends the best of both. A low-key wine town in the heart of an area known for lavish spas and high-end dining, you’ll quickly fall in love with it. 

St. Helena is a small city located in Calistoga, just north of Napa Valley. It does not have a huge population, consisting of only 10,484 residents at the last census. St. Helena has some cool features to offer tourists such as great wine and verdant views.

Sutter Creek 

Welcome to Sutter Creek in California. It is a small gold rush-era town nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains on the banks of the Mokelumne River. It is home to people who have a love of the outdoors and rural living, traditional values, quirky customs, and history. This is a little taste of what life is like here. 

Sutter Creek was established in 1850 and was originally named North Bloomfield. But since there already was a populated spot with this name, it later became Sutter Creek. The present town’s location lies near what had been the North Bloomfield Township. At its greatest size, back in the 1870s, it had a population of over 5,000 people.

Mendocino 

Mendocino, California is a wonderful spot to visit. Situated on the Mendocino Coast of California, most people know it as a vacation spot where you can get lost in the dramatic beauty of the towering coastal redwoods and still have time left to sit on a beach with your feet buried in sand at the beach. 

Mendocino is located in between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. Yet, it has an entirely different vibe than either of those cities in Northern California. It’s closer to Big Sur than San Francisco and has similarities more with Santa Cruz (but more on the outskirts).

Jackson 

Jackson is the county seat of Amador County, which was a Gold Rush city that later became a supply point for miners heading to the Mother Lode. Built around a square with two streets parallel to each other and two perpendiculars, Jackson has an impressive downtown with historic buildings from the late 19th century. 

Jackson is in the heart of Amador County, nestled on Highway 49, known as the “Mother Lode” because it was one of the most productive gold mining areas in California. Jackson can boast a strong patriotic history, a variety of attractive trails, and an excellent choice of amenities. The region is truly a spot where you can come to be outdoors in true style.

Glen Ellen 

Glen Ellen, California is a charming community in the Sonoma Valley AVA wine region. Glen Ellen itself is not a city but rather a census-designated spot and unincorporated area. This little municipality in the heart of Sonoma Valley offers an antidote to some of the more bustling and touristy portions of Northern California. 

Glen Ellen is known as the ‘Grape Capital of Sonoma County,’ but it is also a wonderful little town to enjoy a meal or stay overnight. Although Glen Ellen has been known for its wine production, tourism is quickly taking over as a major source of revenue for the small town, with the Jack London State Historic Park and the surrounding wineries counting as two of its main attractions. 

TripAdvisor lists almost 80 restaurants and 20 hotels within Glen Ellen, making it easy to find an interesting spot to enjoy a meal or spend the night, whether you arrive by car or choose to explore on foot.

Occidental 

Located north of Los Angeles nestled in the hills of Sonoma County, you’ll find the small town of Occidental, California. This lakeside town has a quaint commercial district, friendly locals, and wonderful outdoor venues for swimming, boating, and fishing. The weather is extremely mild especially considering its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and it makes for perfect year-round weather. There are many different things to do and see in Occidental, so it’s no wonder people from all over Northern California visit here regularly. 

Although you’ll never see a sign for this small town on any highway, Occidental is a charming little spot. It’s an old logging town that houses a population of around 1,800 people in Sonoma County. Occidental is known for its natural beauty, being near the Russian River and San Pablo Bay. This is why so many Sonoma visitors flock to Occidental. It also has one of the most historic downtown areas in all of Sonoma with old storefronts and wonderful Victorian homes that give residents a true sense of history.

Fortuna 

Fortuna is located in the Fortuna Union district of Humboldt County. This makes it a part of the greater Eureka area. It is located near Caudecus Ranch Park on the shores of Humboldt Bay and sits at an elevation of 131 feet above sea level. 

Fortuna is a census-designated place (CDP). It is located on the west coast of the United States, about 140 air miles north of San Francisco and about 85 miles south of the Oregon border at the head of navigation on the Klamath River. The population was 13,583 at the 2010 census, up from 11,157 at the 2000 census.  

Fortuna, located on the Eel River, is a quiet country town that caters to fishermen all year long. This town has several options of things to do such as attending community events, great restaurants, and so much more.
