The Grand Canyon

This natural wonder is one of the most popular tourist attractions in not just the United States but the entire world. Carved beautifully by the Colorado River for over centuries, the Grand Canyon is a natural gem. It is one of the top Arizona attractions.

The bridge over the canyon, also called the Skywalk, is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Las Vegas. If you wish to discover lesser-known places, the North Rim or the ‘other side’ of the canyon sits at a height of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) and offers a breathtaking view. You can also choose a path less taken and go hiking across the Grand Canyon from South Rim to North Rim, which is a total of 21 miles (34 kilometers).

Did you know this area has a house called the White House, which is said to have been constructed back in 1050 AD? The majority of the ruins, which are inaccessible, are believed to have been occupied from 350 AD to 1300. Havasu Falls

Cascading down from a 100 feet tall cliff is the Havasu Waterfall gleaming off a green-blue tint as the waters hit the ground. Once here, you will meet members of the Havasupai tribe (meaning ‘people of the green-blue water’) who were originally farmers but now depend heavily on the tourist trade.

As the fall is beautifully forked, it appears that there are two falls whenever the river flows heavily. You can take a helicopter tour of the falls for an almost surreal aerial view. If you enjoy scenic visuals created by water bodies and hike trails, this waterfall will give you a lot of memories to cherish for a lifetime and is truly one of the most fun things to do in Arizona.

Bisbee

Near the Mexico border on the southeast zone of the state, Bisbee is Arizona’s best-kept secret. It is set in the mountains, and as a former mining town, it has its own unique little community. Once the mines were closed, this town turned into a ghost town until squatters took shelter here.

Eventually, it became the hub for artists of all kinds. From a town that was quiet and eerie, today, it has transitioned into a place that is vibrant and joyous. It also has the former miner’s cabins present as a part of the historic downtown. However, some of these trails might seem difficult to access due to the long set of stairs. Bisbee is filled with interesting things to do, such as visiting historic buildings, walking the beautiful streets, going shopping, and trying tempting delicacies at one of the many eateries here.

London Bridge

When the London Bridge was sinking into the Thames River due to a traffic overload, the city decided to put it up for sale. Robert P. McCulloch, the founder of Lake Havasu City, bought it in 1968 for 2.46 million dollars and decided to reconstruct it here.

It is 280 meters (930 feet) long and was initially purchased and remodeled to attract tourists and potential retirement home buyers for McCulloh’s properties in the city. After adding concrete and altering the original masonry, this bridge was rededicated on October 10, 1971, and links the central part of the city with an island on the Colorado River.

Top 18 Places to Visit and Things to Do in Quartzsite, Arizona https://roveratlas.com/north-america/usa/arizona/quartzsite/things-to-do-in-quartzsite/ Thu, 09 Dec 2021 23:47:45 +0000 https://roveratlas.com/?p=4844 Read more]]> Adventure lovers will find Quartzsite, Arizona, to be their dream destination. Popularly referred to as the “Rock Capital of the World”, Quartzsite is frequented by innumerable globe-trotters for RV shows and gem events each year. Though the population of this small Arizona town is only about 4000-5000 people, a few times every year, this number crosses a million. Summers are sweltering here, but Quartzsite welcomes its visitors with beautiful weather come winter, fall, or spring. A little offbeat and a whole lot of exciting, Quartzsite is a pleasant surprise. And people who want to know what real adventure means must visit this place! There are innumerable things to do in Quartzsite, Arizona, and we have enlisted the best ones here.

Castle Dome Museum

Arizona is home to some really eerie and (possibly) haunted places, and the Castle Dome Museum near Quartzsite is one of them. You see, there were many mining towns in Arizona, and most of them were eventually abandoned. Castle Dome was a similar town, dating back to the 1860s. There was a time when it was teeming with life, but now there is nothing left of the place except for a few broken structures that stand in perfect sync with the rustic exteriors. It is recommended to take a guided tour of this place to better understand the lives of local Native Americans.

Quartzsite Annual Mineral Shows and Swap Meets

One of the most prominent things to do in Quartzsite if you visit in January and February is attending the annual shows displaying colorful rocks and minerals along with swap meets. These annual shows are some of the largest gem and mineral events in the world. It is interesting to see several crystal lovers, rock-hounds, and jewelers from across the world attend in such exponential numbers. It is a great place for meeting fellow crystal fans too! There are also many RV sites near the venues of these shows.

Dripping Springs

Dripping Springs, an 18.4-mile-long trail located east of Quartzsite on Interstate 10 is one of the most sought-after destinations for adventure lovers in Quartzsite. It offers panoramic views of the wilderness, and the major attractions include abandoned and historic mines, Native American petroglyphs, and a stone-made cabin. Near the cabin, there is a cave with dripping springs, hence the name. The end of the trail, however, needs additional exertion; carrying water is recommended.

Hi Jolly’s Tomb

One of the major Quartzsite attractions, Hi Jolly’s Tomb is a must-see for anyone who visits this place. Hi Jolly’s tomb is dedicated to a Syrian immigrant, Hadji Ali. Back in the day, the federal government had enlisted his services to introduce camels into the southwest American deserts. While the camel plan didn’t quite work out, Hajdi Ali stayed in Quartzsite till his death. His tomb, called the Hi Jolly’s Tomb is adorned with a bronze statue of a camel to honor his memory by the locals who loved him.

Quartzsite Rock Alignment and Intaglio

Among the many Quartzsite things to do, do not forget to check out Quartzsite Rock Alignment and Intaglio. The history of Quartzsite mainly revolves around rugged terrains and rocks in particular. The Quartzsite Rock Alignment spells ‘Quartzsite’ with an arrow pointing towards the town, acting as a direction for airmen to prevent them from getting lost in the desert during World War II.

Intaglio, another interesting thing to see here, is a large image of a fisherman created by the Native Americans with the help of rocks. It is interesting to see their creativity as the depiction has been done in a desert environment.

Petroglyphs and Grinding Holes

Tyson Wash, located near Quartzsite, is a dry wash that feeds into the Colorado River post rains. This happens during the spring. One of the major Quartzsite attractions, the famous Native American petroglyphs can be seen in this area. These are mainly pictographs and artworks done on rocks that often tell a Native American story. Petroglyphs stand as a symbol of respect and thankfulness that the indigenous people have for Mother Earth.

Another attraction is the Grinding Holes. It is evident from the name that these holes were made for grinding seeds and corns long ago. They are still present in the form of large depressions and holes in the rocks.

Palm Canyon

One of the highlights of Quartzsite attractions is the Palm Canyon. Located on Highway 95, this is a unique desert place. However, there is a slight confusion regarding the palm trees found in this area, whether they are native to the place or not. But what is truly magnificent about this place is the canyon-lined oasis, which is breathtakingly beautiful. It exudes a sense of calm serenity, and in many ways, it will remind you of Egypt. Since the trail is not very clear and distinct, you must keep a watch for the ‘Palm Canyon’ sign on the road. Once you locate the canyon, you will understand what a beauty this place is!

Mystery Castle

Our favorite thing about the Mystery Castle is the story it holds for it is most heart-rending and comforting. Here is how it goes. The castle came into existence somewhere in the 1930s. It was built by Boyce Luther Gulley for his daughter Mary Lou Gulley without her knowledge. Boyce Luther Gulley built Mary Lou a native stone castle with parapets, eighteen rooms, about thirteen fireplaces, and several delightful nooks and crannies, and equipped it with southwestern antiques. However, Boyce Luther happened to pass away before he had a chance to show it to his family.

Soon after, Mary Lou learned about it through an attorney and moved her house into the native stone castle. She then made it her house and started giving out tours and sharing the beauty of her house with other people. Now, the Mystery Castle stands tall as a testament to the fact that a parent’s love knows no bounds. And as you may imagine, this building is visited by plenty of families who enjoy showing love in their unique manner.

Robert Indiana’s “Love”

There are only a handful of Pop images that are as well recognized as the piece on LOVE by Robert Indiana. And we think one of the major reasons for that is perhaps the heart-rendering history that attaches itself to the work of art. You see, the critically acclaimed artist Robert Indiana developed his work on LOVE around the time when the United States of America was in the midst of the Vietnam war. We believe it was conceived as a pictorial representation of a request for peace and harmony.

That artwork has since blossomed into numerous prints, paintings, sculptures, banners, rings, tapestries, and stamps. It is everywhere and we hope that the message stands strong along with it. When you do visit Phoenix, you should be sure to embark upon an adventure to discover LOVE in the city. Here, the building was purchased through the Scottsdale Public Art Program and now it stands tall among the colors and buildings of the city.

Bat Cave

The Bat Cave is one of the most unorthodox Phoenix attractions. After all, it is not always that you are greeted by a flurry of thousands and thousands of bats. Yep, that is correct. Over ten to twenty thousand Mexican Free-Tailed bats find their house here between May and October.

Tres Rios Wetlands

The Tres Rios Wetlands has both practical relevance and a beautiful water charm surrounding it. After all, it is a well-constructed wetland complex that is used for the treatment of the wastewater at the interjection of the Rivers of the Salt, Gila, and Agua Fria River.

But the best part is that due to the convenience and clarity of the water, the river is frequented by plenty of birds and the wetland water has been established into a premier birding area. In fact, the river and water make for a winter habitat for several different species of waterfowl that surround the neighboring waters of the river in Phoenix.

And as we conclude, let us do that on the note that the state of Arizona is a wonderful state and the Valley of the Sun is super cheerful with an abundance of resorts, spas, and parks. Each experience here has something to give whether it is a story to tell, a lesson to impart, or even just a beautiful sight to offer
