McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture 

Among the various fun things to do in Knoxville, visiting the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville should definitely be on your list. While there, you will be welcomed by ‘Monty’, a 24–feet tall bronze skeleton of a duck-billed dinosaur known as hadrosaur weighing 2,400-pound!  

Though the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is small the exhibits here are fascinating. Most items on display are over 2000 years old, including animal mummies, hair combs, shoes, ceremonial pieces, etc., and give the visitors insight into Tennessee’s culture and historical background.

World’s Fair Park 

This is the Park where the historical World’s Fair was hosted in 1982. Two major structures from the exposition at the park are the Tennessee amphitheater still being used for public events and the Sunsphere observation deck, which offers sweeping views of the local landscape of Tennessee. 

The park also has beautiful, paved walkways, verdant grassy knolls, and numerous fountains. It is also home to the fun, water-themed feature called the Splash Pad, a great place to chill, particularly during summers. The Festival Lawn here hosts several events and festivals around the year.

Mabry-Hazen House 

Located on Mabry Hill, the Mabry-Hazen House was once the residence of one of the most well-known families in Knoxville. Now turned into a museum and a venue for weddings, it was originally built in 1858 and has an extensive collection of antiques belonging to the Mabry-Hazen family.  

A look at the items on display will give you a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of its owners and the famous Tennessee lifestyle of the time. In addition to that, it also holds historical significance as it provides valuable insights into the defining Civil War in which it played a key role. No wonder then that history enthusiasts find this place extremely fascinating!

Catch a Show at Historic Tennessee Theatre  

The Tennessee Theater is a historical building with a breathtaking Spanish-Moorish style of architecture. Built in 1928, this almost a century-old theater with marble floors, original crystal chandeliers, and Asian textiles exudes an old-world charm.  

You can catch some vintage film screenings, touring Broadway shows, classical music performances, and dance performances at the theater. The Knoxville Opera and Symphony Orchestra also perform at the theater regularly. Watching a show at this historic theater is truly a spectacular experience – one that you will cherish for life.

East Tennessee History Center

If you are interested in the rich and varied history of the USA, you must visit the East Tennessee History Center! The range of exhibits at the Center is extensive. Along with personal accounts and original documents, they also have interactive galleries that make learning about history fun and interesting.  

Even when you have children to engage and entertain, the East Tennessee History Center is a great choice. There are several exhibits here that are specially designed with children in mind. They present a fun and engaging way to learn history for children and make for an enjoyable day activity for them.

Zoo Knoxville 

The zoo is one of the major Knoxville attractions, especially if you are looking for things to do in Knoxville this weekend and you have children to entertain. It is spread over 53-acres of land and is home to almost 700 animals – children and animal lovers will simply love this place!  

Children can also enjoy camel rides, feed giraffes, and go on a fun adventure aboard the Zoo Choo train. Apart from that, there are exotic animals like the Khaleesi and Komodo dragons, a theater, a splash pad, and a carousel.  

Fun fact: Over the years, more than 1000 red pandas have been born in this zoo!

Ijams Nature Centre 

If you are confused about what to do in Knoxville, visit Ijams Nature Center – one of the most interesting Knoxville things to do! Spread over an expansive 300 acres of land, this center is an adventure lover’s paradise.  

For biking and hiking enthusiasts, there is a 10-mile-long trail, winding through the wilderness. But if you’d rather relax, the beautiful Mead’s Quarry Lake at the Center is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, or even a picnic by the lake. Ijams Nature Center has also become a favored destination when it comes to nature-themed weddings.

Old City

The historical downtown area of Knoxville is known as the Old City. From cozy little coffee shops to the vibrant art galleries of the Old City that showcase the talent of budding local artists – every nook and cranny of this part of the town has hundreds of years’ worth of history to tell. Some of the oldest and the most historically significant buildings also call the Old City their home.

Knoxville’s Market Square  

Visiting the Market Square area is easily among the top five things to do in Knoxville, TN. It is a busy town center with restaurants, bars, shops, cafes, etc., attracting locals and tourists alike. A great place to hang out with friends, you can shop to your heart’s content and indulge in a variety of foods and drinks here.  

Live concerts and other entertainment events organized here lend this area an upbeat and lively vibe. The two water play fountains are a favorite with children. From May to November, on Saturday and Wednesday, you can find good quality local produce at the open-air Farmer’s market.

Explore the Graffiti at Strong Alley 

A trip to Knoxville is incomplete without paying a visit to one of the most stunning Knoxville attractions – the graffiti at Strong Alley. Also known as the Graffiti Alley, here, as the name suggests, you can witness beautiful street art that will have you awe-struck! 

Hundreds of street art lovers from across the world visit Knoxville, especially for the artistic magnificence of the Strong Alley. Located near the bustling Market Square, it is best visited around dusk after it is illuminated with small lights that lend the graffiti on the wall a surreal feel.

Knoxville Museum of Art 

If you appreciate art in its many forms, visiting the Knoxville Museum of Art should top your list of things to do in Knoxville. Located at World’s Fair Park, it is home to the work of various East Tennessee artists, and it celebrates the state’s culture and heritage with elan.  

Two permanent exhibits – “Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee” and “Throne Rooms” – are very popular here. Both these pieces focus on artists and their careers in the area. Another major attraction at the museum is the huge, beautiful figurative steel and glass sculpture of the world called the “Cycle of Life: Within the Power of Dreams and the Wonder of Infinity”.

James White Fort 

James White Fort is a museum, named after the American soldier and founder of Knoxville. In 1783, he went on an expedition to Upper Tennessee Valley and established the site where Knoxville stands today. A few years later, the fort he built was selected as Southwest Territory’s capital. But within a year, White sold his land donated the proceeds to build a permanent city.  

James White Fort is White’s original home. Some of the highlights include the original map and layout the town, White’s desk, the outhouse, kitchen, weaving house, and a blacksmith shop. Several special holiday events are also hosted here.

Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is a must-visit destination for all basketball fans and enthusiasts for a quick lesson about the history of the game along with the stories of prominent players over the years. It is spread over an area of 35,000 square feet, and special features of the place include the world’s largest basketball that is 30 feet tall and weighs a whopping 10 tons. 

There is also a ‘Hall of Honors’ where names of popular and important players from the Hall of Fame are displayed. Apart from that, there are three different courts where players can test their basketball skills.

Muse Knoxville

The Muse Knoxville is a place dedicated to children. There are science and art galleries in the place, spanning over 4,000 square feet, and many exhibits in the museum focus on teaching children about science, engineering, technology, mathematics, arts, and culture with several hands-on activities. 

It also has themed educational sections with interactive exhibits that make learning fun for children by combining it with play. But the planetarium remains the major attraction at the museum which enables curious minds to explore and learn more about the solar system. It is a perfect day out for the children!

Peter Kern Library

If you want to spend an evening sipping on cocktails and making merry, head to the Perter Kern Library. The place can be identified with a red ball light, and it is a cozy oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.  

Upon entering, you will find a huge bar on your left, and a great speakeasy will greet you. Known for the old-fashioned cocktails on its menu, this is a speakeasy that you must not miss at all. It is a great place to spend some time with your friends and drink the night away!

Bleak House 

Thinking about what to do in Knoxville? Visit the Bleak House! With its long and interesting past, the Bleak House has been termed as a historic property and categorized under the United States Register of Historic Places. In the Battle of Knoxville between Confederates and Unionists, it became a prominent battle point. Even today, there are two cannons embedded in its walls.  

But now that there aren’t any canons balls being flung around (phew!), you can go on a tour inside the Bleak House and learn a great deal about its history as well as that of the Battle of Knoxville.

Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum 

The Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum in Knoxville, Tennessee is spread over an area of 47-acres and makes for a great day excursion for people who love the outdoors. This property was initially a part of a horticultural business, owned by a private family in 1786 and it was only in the year 2001, that it was converted to a public space. 

As of today, there are eight display gardens at the property with a beautiful network of walking trails, a butterfly meadow, and distinctive stone walls running for almost 2 miles. The garden is well-maintained and the staff working there is courteous and knowledgeable.

Stock & Barrel 

Want to taste the best burgers in town? Head straight to Stock and Barrel in Market Square. This is an all-American-style bar and restaurant, serving various kinds of lip-smacking local delicacies. The quirky and fiery menu is loved by people in all age groups, particularly the young lot. A must-try item on the menu is chicken-waffle burgers in which the typical burger bun is replaced by two huge waffles and the patty is replaced by fried chicken as the filling!

Yosemite National Park

Crissy Field

Earlier an airfield, this place is currently a campground at the beach with panoramic views of the sea and the mountains in the distance.  It was restored and opened to the public in 2001, and since then, it has managed to be everyone’s favorite spot to visit.  

It lies well within the city limits and is a perfect spot for a leisurely family camping trip. It gives a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and is easy to access. Not just tourists, it is equally loved by the locals, who come here to spend time with nature. Your children can walk around, build sandcastles, ride bikes, or just relax with a small picnic at this diverse yet peaceful location.

Disney California Adventure

Located near Disneyland, Disney California Adventure is a theme park that has seven different themed areas. One of the most famous rides at the Disney California Adventure, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, is a 360-degree rollercoaster ride that takes you on a loop.  

Several restaurants at Disney California Adventure will satiate all your hunger pangs as well. Watching your child’s face light up with joy as superheroes approach them for small talk and click pictures is simply priceless. If your child enjoys Disney and Pixar films, it might be tough to convince them to leave!

Living Desert

Not just an ordinary zoo, the Living Desert is a conservation site that gives the children an experience of being close to wildlife. It is divided into two sections, Africa and North America. It is home to hundreds of animals such as camels, cheetahs, giraffes, and various other exotic species.  

If your children are adventurous, they can also take a ride on a camel and feed a giraffe. To take a view of the entire park, you can use the shuttle service and then stop wherever you wish to.

Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park is a place that preserves the unique biodiversity of the state. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway along the sandy beaches and the hills. It has historic cottages for you to spend time at and a diverse range of wildlife for your children to explore.  

Did you know that the Treasure Island, made in 1918 and the Treasure Island released in 1934, were both shot at the Crystal Cove State Park? It is a highly fun-filled place to spend a weekend lets your child’s imagination sore by building sandcastles, exploring tidepools, and having fun in the waters.

Turtle Bay Exploration Park

Turtle Bay Exploration Park is a fun-filled activity center spread over 300 acres of land along the scenic Sacramento River. It features multiple playgrounds, a lush botanical garden, and the well-known Sundial Bridge.  

It has a ticketed entry system, and fun events are regularly hosted here. It covers a plethora of subjects, from art and science to history and natural wildlife, and it is a popular tourist destination. Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lake Tahoe

Surrounded by beautiful mountains and dense forests, the stunning Lake Tahoe is a natural playground for children. Legoland California

There is not a better place for a family hangout than Legoland. With rides, building workshops, and live shows, this Legoland is sure to qualify as everyone’s favorite – not just of the younger lot.  

The place is completely safe and child-friendly; hence children of all age groups can have a memorable experience. It is also a resort and can be a perfect weekend getaway destination for an overnight stay. The iconic attraction of this place is the Lego Movie World and the Lego waterpark. Universal Studios

Who does not love a Universal Studios experience? From movie sets to thrilling rides, this place has it all. Here, you can take the children to glimpse behind-the-scenes stories of famous Hollywood movies and see how movie stunts are actually performed.  

The sheer happiness on their faces on seeing their favorite characters come alive and the look of joy as they experience exhilarating roller coaster rides is a delight in itself. If there is something that makes the reel seem real and will absolutely fascinate your children, it is Universal Studios. This one is truly unmissable!

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is the kind of place that has everything – from scenic trails to a performing arts stage and lush gardens. It has several cultural institutions spread over an area of 1,200 acres. It also has a unique set of activities designed specifically for kids below the age of 12, including a puppet theater and an air and space museum as well.  

The folks at Balboa are all children loving, and the entire space is children friendly. If you’re taking your kids here, get ready for them to remain engaged throughout.

Golden Gate Bridge

The most-loved icon in all of California is more than just a scenic view of the Sacramento River and imposing mountains. It also offers a valuable insight into the history of the city. The bridge’s height is 746 feet (227.4 meters), and it is about a mile (1.6 kilometers) wide.  

You can take a walk, ride a bike, or even enjoy a boat ride under the bridge for a different kind of viewing experience altogether. Visiting the state and not visiting the Golden Gate Bridge with your children sounds like an unfair deal. Griffith Observatory

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island in the middle of the sea was built as a federal prison. It is located about 1.25 miles (2.01 km) offshore from San Francisco. Though it is a small island, it holds the long history of America’s struggle for justice.

Sequoia National Park

Take a tour of the USS Hornet

During the second world war, the United States of America played a crucial role in shaping World Politics and creating the world as we know it today. The equipment that facilitated the country in achieving this has been stored and preserved.  

One such site is the USS Hornet Museum which has over 20,00 artifacts, including USS Hornet itself, which was a significant navy vessel. Grunion Run 

Don’t worry if you have not heard of something called a Grunion. They are a fascinating species of fish, about five to six inches long, silver in color, that leave the water at night and come on the beaches throughout the Southern part during the spring and summer months.  

You can visit the beaches to spot them but remember these are seasonal. To pick the Grunion, you will need a California fishing license which is given to individuals above the age of 16 only. The state is known for Grunion, and visiting here with your kids will become a memory that the kids will definitely remember for decades to come.

Calico Ghost Town

Calico was a former mining town back in 1881 abandoned in the 1890s, which led it to become a ghost town. This ghost town was later purchased by Walter Knott in the 1950s and was architecturally restored. However, he chose to keep five buildings the same as they were in the 1880s.  

Today, Calico stands as a country park and is visited by several tourists from across the globe. It also offers a range of recreational activities, such as off-roading, hiking, and camping.

Anne’s Beach | Lower Matecumbe Key 

Anne’s Beach is loved by people who just want to relax and laze on the sands and water sports lovers. It is named after Anne Eaton, who is a local environmentalist.

Sombrero Beach | Marathon 

Sombrero Beach is among the lesser popular and known ones in the Middle Keys. Though the place is a favorite with the locals, many tourists are not as lucky in exploring the place.  

The Atlantic Ocean shoreline, with its soft white sands, makes the place an ideal snorkeling destination. Swimmers also find the place very suitable.  

Sombrero Beach is pet-friendly and handicapped-accessible as well. Facilities offered include a playground with swings for kids, picnic pavilions, showers, a volleyball court, and restrooms.  

This beach is a nesting site for endangered sea turtles. Unless the baby turtles hatch and swim away, entry is banned in the area.

Coco Plum Beach | Marathon 

Located right on the Atlantic Ocean, Coco Plum Beach is completely natural, unlike many others in Key West. Expanding to quite a large area, you can relax on the golden sands here in the way you want.  

It is pet-friendly and has a low crowd too. Restroom facilities and a covered pavilion are important features here. The shoreline, which is adjacent to the wetlands, is a nesting site for endangered turtles.  

So, entry is restricted at this place sometimes.

Curry Hammock State Park Beach | Marathon 

This one overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and has a shoreline that is 1,200 feet long. The park is almost 1,000 acres of ultimate tropical maritime wilderness. 

This is an uninhabited part, and the seagrass beds and mangrove swamps are highly protected here. Lucky visitors might spot a dolphin or a manatee.  

Various water sports can be enjoyed here, including windsurfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and kiteboarding. Overnight camping options are available with fishing and hiking, and you can also explore the offshore islands and the beautiful coves.

Calusa Beach | Big Pine Key 

One of the best destinations for family outings, this one is located in Bahia Honda State Park. One of the best shorelines in Key West, the place is sheltered with a covered area and lots of parking space. 

If there are young swimmers with you, keep a watch on them as the shore slopes off rapidly past the beach. Snorkeling is really fun here because of abundant fish and marine life.  

There are also coral reefs nearby. The nature center here explains about local fauna and flora.

Dry Tortugas National Park | Key West 

Visiting Dry Tortugas National Park in Key West is an experience in itself. Located at almost 70 miles west of Key West, it extends into the Gulf of Mexico and spans 64,000 acres.  

The place is accessed by boat or by seaplane. Explore Fort Jefferson, the four beaches, and the seven islands at the park. Fort Jefferson is unfinished and takes some time to explore.  

The waters are full of marine life and corals – snorkeling and scuba diving are the favorite activities here. You can sunbathe and relax under the tall palm trees on white-sand beaches.  

The place is remote and is a favorite with birdwatchers, environmentalists, archaeologists, etc.

One of the primary attractions here is the submerged sandbar, which can be seen during low tide. The sandhills are a great place to laze after sunbathing.  

Though the water is shallow, you can collect as many shells and sea glasses as you want. This place is also popular for excellent stargazing at night.  

With almost zero pollution, the sky seems clear, and you can see the stars. The place abounds in 150 varieties of fauna, which can be seen while hiking the three trails there.

Cannon Beach | Key Largo 

Cannon Beach is among the man-made beaches in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You can see that some cannons have been placed on the shoreline.  

Snorkeling is the most favorite activity for tourists here. While exploring marine life, you can see the replica of a Spanish shipwreck at a distance of 100 feet from the shoreline.  

There is an undersea park here, covering Cannon Beach and Key Largo areas. You have to pay an entry fee to get inside the park.

Visiting this aquarium is among the important ‘Clearwater things to do’. It is mainly dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of injured, sick, and endangered marine animals.

Sand Key Park

The beautiful Sand Key Park has two areas – a beach and a park. This 95-acre landmark is extremely popular and makes it to the list of things to do in Clearwater.  

It also has a salt marsh with benches where you can sit, relax and observe the herons, great horned owls, and roseate spoonbills. You may also spot sea turtles there.

Pier 60

Stop thinking about what to do in Clearwater and head straight to Pier 60. It has a 1,080-feet fishing pier with a bait house, telescopes, and six covered pavilions.  

If you are interested in fishing, you must definitely visit this pier, as the bait house offers a complete line of fishing tackle, rental equipment, a full line of bait, and staff who are eager to assist.  

It is lit at night, so you can even enjoy night fishing. The bait house also has T-shirts, souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. The pier has a recreational park and a well-equipped playground, which is one of the largest beach playgrounds on the Gulf.

Encounters with Dolphins is a sightseeing tour on a 40-feet excursion boat. They offer multiple rides from the Clearwater Beach Marina every day and have various tour options.

Beach Walk

The Beach Walk is a long pedestrian-friendly path lined with palm trees at the Clearwater Beach. It lets you enjoy a quiet stroll while taking in the ambiance around.

Moccasin Lake Nature Park

Honeymoon Island State Park 

As the name suggests, Honeymoon Island is a major attraction for newlyweds. The most protected area of the island, the Honeymoon Island State Park, is one of the most visited state parks in Florida.

Pinellas Trail

The Pinellas Trail, also known as the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, covers about 47 miles. In the north, it stretches up to Tarpon Springsand in the south, it stretches up to St. Petersburg. It passes through Clearwater, among many other cities.  

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is named after a former Pinellas County Administrator, Fred Marquis, and provides a unique green space for jogging, skating, and cycling. Caladesi Island State Park 

The Caladesi Island State Park is situated to the south of Honeymoon Island State Park and is accessible by a ferry or private boat from there.  

It is a totally natural island, and in fact, is one of the few such in the Gulf Coast of Florida. It was rated America’s Best Beach in 2008. This island is secluded, and so, you get a perfect blend of peace and fun here.

Clearwater Threshers 

If you are a sports fanatic, you will surely enjoy the game of Clearwater Threshers, which is a minor league baseball team. The team has been competing in the North Division since 2009 and plays almost 70 home games during the season. So, you can surely catch one.

Cleveland Street District

A visit to Cleveland Street District is a must on the list of things to do in Clearwater. The District provides a spectacular view of the Clearwater Harbor and Marina and is known for its stunning backdrops for concerts and events.

Cliff Stephens Park

Columbia Restaurant 

Columbia Restaurant is a branch of a long-standing Cuban restaurant, which was first established in 1905 by Cuban immigrant Casimiro Hernandez Sr. in Tampa.

Florida Botanical Gardens 

Located in Largo, this garden covers an area of 182 acres and has native flora, fauna, and natural resources in abundance. It also has a formal wedding garden and areas, which showcase some of the rarest natural habitats.

This facility has been operating in Matlacha since 1992 and has made it to the list of things to do in Clearwater due to its reputation of providing a fun experience to visitors. Muir Woods National Monument

Yosemite National Park

Alcatraz Island

lcatraz Island is among the most infamous prisons in the world. The island is spread over 22 acres. It is nicknamed “The Rock” due to its remote location and the way it protrudes from the waters of San Francisco Bay.  

Ferry services are available, along with guided tours that take you to the museum to enlighten you about the lives of the prisoners and prison staff. This is a day trip you must take.

Carmel-by-the-sea 

Talking about day trips from San Francisco, do not miss Carmel-by-the-sea. This sleepy, romantic beach town is just over two hours’ drive south of the city. Carmel-by-the-sea is famous for its old-town ambiance, fairytale-like cottages, and art galleries.  

The town gives a pristine view of Carmel Bay. At Point Lobos in Carmel-by-the-sea, you can find a variety of sea animals and wildlife and enjoy diving, too. If you are lucky, you may even spot some whales.  

The drive along the oceanfront of Highway One between Carmel and Monterey is considered one of the most beautiful drives on the West Coast. Carmel-by-the-sea also has some fine dining restaurants to satisfy your appetite. This is a San Francisco day trip you should not miss.

Sebastopol 

A laid-back town in Sonoma County, Sebastopol is worth visiting for its charm and surprises. Once a predominantly apple-growing area, it now has many vineyards and wineries as well.  

You can have delicious food, shop for rare antiques, visit local farms, and go golfing, hiking, or biking here. Florence Avenue displays imaginative and colorful pieces of art made using recycled trash.  

The Barlow features a cluster of old warehouses used by apple canneries, which have been converted into a trendy marketplace. You can also explore the Laguna de Santa Rosa, which is the country’s largest freshwater wetlands complex and houses perennial marshes, oak woodlands, and grasslands.  

Sebastopol is also famous for Gravenstein apples and annually hosts an Apple Blossom Festival. Instead of planning a day trip here, spend a couple of days.

Silicon Valley 

A must-visit place during a day trip, Silicon Valley in California will leave you in complete awe. Home to many tech giants, you will come out of this place more intrigued and impressed.  

The day trip will be informative and interesting. The drive from San Francisco to Silicon Valley is just under an hour, and the Google Campus and Apple Park Visitor Centre must be a part of your tour.

Big Sur

The drive to Big Sur, through Highway 1, along the Pacific Coast is breathtaking. Big Sur also offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking.  

You can visit the McWay Falls, which is one of the two waterfalls in California that directly plunge into the ocean. Or, you can lose yourself in the wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest.  

Camping grounds are also available along Big Sur for those who want to rest and explore the area a bit more. You can even plan a getaway and relax at the spas here. This is not a day trip, so make sure you have ample time.

Point Reyes 

You can reach Point Reyes by driving for just over an hour from the city. So, this is ideal for a day trip. This beautiful national preserve is a popular tourist attraction, and it is home to over 1,500 species of plants and animals.  

You can hike your way up to the edge to witness the ocean crashing against the rocks, and you can also watch the majestic elks at the Tule Elk Preserve. While Point Reyes Station is a small cozy town nearby, Point Reyes National Seashore has many beaches to explore.  

From January to April, you may be able to catch glimpses of the migrating whales from the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk 

This two-hour ride can be considered one of the best weekend trips from San Francisco. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk welcomes you with California’s oldest amusement park.  

The park has a number of options for those who love thrill rides. The Boardwalk extends to the picturesque Monterey Bay and also leads to the Main Beach, where you can swim or paddleboard.

Marin Headlands 

The Marin Headlands is a very short drive away and one of the best day trips from San Francisco. It is a hilly peninsula located just north of the city, at the southernmost end of Marin County in California.  

The area is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It gives a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge and The Bay Area.  

At the center point of the Marin Headlands, the Hawk Hill, you can witness thousands of hawks, kites, eagles, vultures, and falcons. Abundant wildlife can also be spotted here.

University Town (Berkeley) 

The city of Berkeley is home to the University of California. It is the first campus of the University of California and is ranked among the top universities in the world.  

Just half an hours’ drive from Sausalito, the university has classical-style buildings. Sather Tower, one of the tallest bell towers in the world, is situated at the center of Berkeley. The ring of its bell can be heard from across the campus.

Half Moon Bay is a charming, quaint coastal town on the California Coast just 30 miles south of San Francisco. It gets its name because of the beautiful crescent-shaped harbor to the north of the town.  

The coastline has some gorgeous beaches, while the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary lets you enjoy an area full of marine biodiversity.  

You can enjoy local craft beer at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. The world-famous surfing spot, Mavericks Beach, draws many surfers. Do spend some time here, so don’t plan a day trip.

Filoli Estate 

Filoli Estate is about 30 miles away from San Francisco and is a treat for the eyes. It’s a great option for a day trip. The manor house is a fine example of the Georgian Revival Tradition. Situated in Santa Clara Country, Mountain View is named for its views of the Santa Cruz mountains. To the rest of the world, Mountain View is the home of the corporate headquarters complex of Google. Hailed as the birthplace of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto is perhaps best-known for acting as the seat of the internationally renowned Stanford University. Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach in Southern California might well be small, but an abundance of recreational facilities and top-notch schools and colleges make it one of the most livable cities over here. Everson Museum of Art

Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology 

One of the popular Syracuse attractions, this place has something to interest visitors across age groups.  

Also referred to as MoST, it is located in Armory Square. It is 35,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, where you can learn about geology, technology, outer space, paleontology, and much more.

Salt Museum

Syracuse supplied the majority of salt to the whole of America during the 19th century and is still known as the “Salt City”. The museum is situated in Liverpool, a short drive from the city, and houses exhibits and artifacts used during that time.  

You can visit the site and see how brine was turned into salt on boiling blocks using kettles, wooden barrels, and tools. You will find guides dressed in period clothing which will take you on a tour of the entire place.  

The place has been constructed using the actual timbers used in salt warehouses.

Erie Canal Museum

Erie Canal Museum is a historic place housed in the country’s only remaining weighlock building. It exhibits artifacts dealing with the Erie Canal and emphasizes its role in making the state of New York what it is today.  

The canal has played a very important role in the country’s expansion towards the West. The exhibits have been designed thoughtfully and are informative and entertaining.  

Admission to the museum is free, but they encourage a $5 donation. Make sure to visit this place if history excites you. This is definitely one of the things to see in Syracuse.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que 

This started as a small mobile concession stand and a biker bar. But now, it has now become one of the most famous barbeque chains in the state.

The Unique Upside-Down Traffic Signal 

The Tipperary Hill Traffic Light is one of the most unique Syracuse attractions. Unlike every other traffic signal in America, this one displays the green light above the red.  

The story goes that the majority of the labor team responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal were Irish immigrants. These families belonged to the County Tipperary and thus the area’s name.  

However, when a traffic signal was installed, the Irish felt that the red light at the top stood for British preference, and therefore, they would repeatedly break it. Eventually, it was decided to reverse the signal, and so it stands till this day.

Clinton Square

Clinton Square displays stunning buildings representing the historic culture of the city. It is a favorite hangout for visitors and locals alike.  

It came into existence in the 19th century and, since then, has been a place for get-togethers. The Square houses several important monuments like the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the Jerry Rescue Monument.  

A large ice rink is set up in the middle of the square during the winters, and during summers, a big farmers’ market occupies the place. Besides these, a number of festivals and events keep taking place at the square. There are many local bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops here.

Catch a show at Landmark Theatre 

One of the fun things to do in Syracuse is to visit the Landmark Theater. It is from the era of lavish movie palaces. The theater reminds you of the time gone by, with its beautiful murals and architecture. 

It is the city’s only surviving example of opulent, theatrical venues from the 1920s. Once, it was decided to demolish the theater. However, it was saved time and again and was finally listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  

Today, the theater hosts live performances, concerts, and events, and will give you all the rich feel on your visit.

The Westcott Theater 

This is a comparatively new theater serving the crowd of Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.  

It was originally constructed as a movie theater in 1919 and has now been changed into a live music venue. It features an array of house sound systems and new stage monitoring functionality.  

The theater has been upgraded to make the venue more adaptable for private events, corporate parties, and other large-scale parties.

Beaver Lake Nature Center 

Beaver Lake Nature Center is a nature lover’s paradise with more than 661 acres. It is just a short drive from the city and offers a lot of activities for all age groups. 

The trails here give you a chance to explore the center’s diverse habitat. There are more than 200 species of birds and 800 plant varieties here. During summer, you can participate in a number of water activities and also rent canoes and kayaks.  

Springtime brings in the migratory Canada Geese to the lake. The trails are also used for educational tours by schools. During winters, the trails are used for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Stickley Museum 

It opened in 2007 and honors the legacy of the Stickley Brothers, who designed excellent, high-quality wooden furniture. It highlights the workers’ craftsmanship, whose commitment to quality led to Stickley’s reputation for manufacturing heirloom quality furniture.  

Their furniture was very popular as it was made for usage and not just to be placed as décor items. The place is spread over 8,000 square feet and exhibits historical furniture as well as images and documents, which illustrate the significance and journey of the company.

Webster Pond 

Located to the south of the city, Webster Pond is a 95-acre sanctuary. It is operated and maintained by the Anglers Association.  

The park adjacent to the pond, Rand Tract, has a 2-mile hiking trail through the surrounding woods. The meticulously manicured grounds have many benches for people to rest.  

The association offers many programs, including fishing instructions, to people of all age groups. You can feed the ducks here by buying a large bag of dried corn from the association volunteers. Wildlife here includes ducks, geese, turtles, opossum, deer, and foxes.

Onondaga Historical Association 

Here, you will find America’s largest collection of regional historical treasures, as it celebrates the County’s culture, architecture, and people.  

The museum has three permanent exhibits on the Underground Railroad, Chinese immigration, and Onondaga County itself. It showcases the fashion of people in the early 20th century and their lives in the county during the Second World War. 

It houses more than two million archival photos, maps, documents, and records related to the County. Apart from the permanent exhibits, it also showcases temporary exhibits from time to time. The association’s research center is also open for visitors.

Onondaga Lake Park

Known as the Central Park of Central New York, this is a linear greenway that stretches over 7 miles and has spectacular scenery. Located on the shores of Onondaga Lake, it houses the famous Salt Museum and has four beautiful trails.  

The property includes the Wegmans Boundless Playground, which is the largest play space accessible to kids and adults in Central New York. At the Griffin Visitor Center, you can rent bikes or skates and explore the biking trails.

E. M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden 

E. M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden is located in Thornden Park near Syracuse University campus. It has been named after the former President of the Syracuse Rose Society.  

The garden is filled with more than 3,000 varieties of roses and looks beautiful, especially when the flowers are in full bloom in June. It has been maintained meticulously by the volunteers from the Rose Society.

Onondaga Creekwalk

The Onondaga Creekwalk is a multi-use partly bricked 2.6 mile-long trail. It follows the course of Onondaga Creek to Onondaga Lake.  

There are plans to extend the trail to connect it to the Lake Trail and Erie Canal Trail. It is used by bicyclists, skaters, and pedestrians and is lined with many lights, signs, and benches. 

The highlights of the trail include a view of the National Grid Building from W Washington Street, crossing the creek on an old railroad bridge. Enjoy the views along the creek walk and a spectacular view of the lake at the trail’s northern terminus.

This public library has more than 30 branches all over Onondaga County, but the one in downtown Syracuse is the headquarters, also referred to as the Central Library.  

Here, there is a vast assortment of traditional resources as well as digital ones. It has a large collection of books and an award-winning local History Department. 

The library has a MakerSpace with front-line technology where you can learn, create and build. It also consists of a music recording room, sewing machines, 3-D printer and other tools which visitors can use.

Clark Reservation State Park 

This is also a very short drive from the city and houses a small lake in the basin. Interestingly, the bottom water of the lake does not mix with the surface water.  

The area is filled with woods as well as meadows and has many nature trails. Guided nature walks are offered here. You will also find the cliff, plunge basin, and the gorge of an ancient waterfall that existed during the ice age, along with other rocky formations.  

It is also a principal site for American Hart’s Tongue fern, which is considered to be an endangered species. The place also offers fishing, picnic tables, and pavilions.

Lakeland Winery was established by Andrew Watkins, a wine enthusiast, as the first custom wine-making facility in the state. They offer wine tasting, personal wine-making parties, and classes.

Here, you can make a batch of 30 bottles of your own wine. You will have to return after 7 weeks to collect the wine you made.

This is a huge farmers’ market situated north of the city. It is one of the oldest such places in the state and has been operating since 1942.

Carova Beach is isolated compared to the other Outer Banks beaches in North Carolina. The main reason for this is the unpaved roads in the area. It is only accessible by a 4×4-wheel drive and does not have large supermarkets or many amenities. Carova Beach offers several secluded vacation rentals directly on the beach or tucked away in sand dunes.

Topsail Island

Topsail Island offers a small-town feel and a laid-back getaway. It has three main beach areas, namely, North Topsail Beach, Surf City, and Topsail Beach. North Topsail Beach is surrounded by water on three sides and lets you enjoy many water activities. Surf City is a more commercial place with lots of stores and restaurants. You can also visit the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center and check out Serenity point, the southernmost point of the Island, for some amazing views.

The small city of Duck, which earned its name due to the popularity of duck hunting in the 20th century, is as famous for its beaches as for its shops and restaurants. You will find some of the best clothes shops located here, along with art galleries, jewelry stores, farm stands, spas, and so much more. The restaurants here draw locals from all over the Outer Banks.

Duck also offers several water activities. You can paddleboard, surf or go on a kayak or just swim. There are several trails that make biking, running, or walking preferred activities. Currituck Beach is located by the Atlantic Ocean and Currituck Sound. It provides seclusion as well as relaxation to its visitors. Hammocks Beach State Park

Hammocks Beach State Park is accessible only by ferry, boat, canoes, or kayaks and is preferred by those looking for a quiet, relaxing beach vacation. It has three smaller islands which are mainly undeveloped and give you a closer feel to nature and the ocean.
