McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture 

Among the various fun things to do in Knoxville, visiting the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville should definitely be on your list. While there, you will be welcomed by ‘Monty’, a 24–feet tall bronze skeleton of a duck-billed dinosaur known as hadrosaur weighing 2,400-pound!  

Though the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture is small the exhibits here are fascinating. Most items on display are over 2000 years old, including animal mummies, hair combs, shoes, ceremonial pieces, etc., and give the visitors insight into Tennessee’s culture and historical background.

World’s Fair Park 

This is the Park where the historical World’s Fair was hosted in 1982. Two major structures from the exposition at the park are the Tennessee amphitheater still being used for public events and the Sunsphere observation deck, which offers sweeping views of the local landscape of Tennessee. 

The park also has beautiful, paved walkways, verdant grassy knolls, and numerous fountains. It is also home to the fun, water-themed feature called the Splash Pad, a great place to chill, particularly during summers. The Festival Lawn here hosts several events and festivals around the year.

Mabry-Hazen House 

Located on Mabry Hill, the Mabry-Hazen House was once the residence of one of the most well-known families in Knoxville. Now turned into a museum and a venue for weddings, it was originally built in 1858 and has an extensive collection of antiques belonging to the Mabry-Hazen family.  

A look at the items on display will give you a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of its owners and the famous Tennessee lifestyle of the time. In addition to that, it also holds historical significance as it provides valuable insights into the defining Civil War in which it played a key role. No wonder then that history enthusiasts find this place extremely fascinating!

Catch a Show at Historic Tennessee Theatre  

The Tennessee Theater is a historical building with a breathtaking Spanish-Moorish style of architecture. Built in 1928, this almost a century-old theater with marble floors, original crystal chandeliers, and Asian textiles exudes an old-world charm.  

You can catch some vintage film screenings, touring Broadway shows, classical music performances, and dance performances at the theater. The Knoxville Opera and Symphony Orchestra also perform at the theater regularly. Watching a show at this historic theater is truly a spectacular experience – one that you will cherish for life.

East Tennessee History Center

If you are interested in the rich and varied history of the USA, you must visit the East Tennessee History Center! The range of exhibits at the Center is extensive. Along with personal accounts and original documents, they also have interactive galleries that make learning about history fun and interesting.  

Even when you have children to engage and entertain, the East Tennessee History Center is a great choice. There are several exhibits here that are specially designed with children in mind. They present a fun and engaging way to learn history for children and make for an enjoyable day activity for them.

Zoo Knoxville 

The zoo is one of the major Knoxville attractions, especially if you are looking for things to do in Knoxville this weekend and you have children to entertain. It is spread over 53-acres of land and is home to almost 700 animals – children and animal lovers will simply love this place!  

Children can also enjoy camel rides, feed giraffes, and go on a fun adventure aboard the Zoo Choo train. Apart from that, there are exotic animals like the Khaleesi and Komodo dragons, a theater, a splash pad, and a carousel.

Ijams Nature Centre 

If you are confused about what to do in Knoxville, visit Ijams Nature Center – one of the most interesting Knoxville things to do! Spread over an expansive 300 acres of land, this center is an adventure lover’s paradise.  

For biking and hiking enthusiasts, there is a 10-mile-long trail, winding through the wilderness. But if you’d rather relax, the beautiful Mead’s Quarry Lake at the Center is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boating, or even a picnic by the lake. Ijams Nature Center has also become a favored destination when it comes to nature-themed weddings.

Old City

The historical downtown area of Knoxville is known as the Old City. From cozy little coffee shops to the vibrant art galleries of the Old City that showcase the talent of budding local artists – every nook and cranny of this part of the town has hundreds of years’ worth of history to tell. Some of the oldest and the most historically significant buildings also call the Old City their home.

Knoxville’s Market Square  

Visiting the Market Square area is easily among the top five things to do in Knoxville, TN. It is a busy town center with restaurants, bars, shops, cafes, etc., attracting locals and tourists alike. A great place to hang out with friends, you can shop to your heart’s content and indulge in a variety of foods and drinks here.  

Live concerts and other entertainment events organized here lend this area an upbeat and lively vibe. The two water play fountains are a favorite with children. From May to November, on Saturday and Wednesday, you can find good quality local produce at the open-air Farmer’s market.

Explore the Graffiti at Strong Alley 

A trip to Knoxville is incomplete without paying a visit to one of the most stunning Knoxville attractions – the graffiti at Strong Alley. Also known as the Graffiti Alley, here, as the name suggests, you can witness beautiful street art that will have you awe-struck!

Knoxville Museum of Art 

If you appreciate art in its many forms, visiting the Knoxville Museum of Art should top your list of things to do in Knoxville. Located at World’s Fair Park, it is home to the work of various East Tennessee artists, and it celebrates the state’s culture and heritage with elan.  

Two permanent exhibits – “Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee” and “Throne Rooms” – are very popular here. Both these pieces focus on artists and their careers in the area. Another major attraction at the museum is the huge, beautiful figurative steel and glass sculpture of the world called the “Cycle of Life: Within the Power of Dreams and the Wonder of Infinity”.

James White Fort 

James White Fort is a museum, named after the American soldier and founder of Knoxville. In 1783, he went on an expedition to Upper Tennessee Valley and established the site where Knoxville stands today. A few years later, the fort he built was selected as Southwest Territory’s capital. But within a year, White sold his land donated the proceeds to build a permanent city.  

James White Fort is White’s original home. Some of the highlights include the original map and layout the town, White’s desk, the outhouse, kitchen, weaving house, and a blacksmith shop. Several special holiday events are also hosted here.

Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame

The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is a must-visit destination for all basketball fans and enthusiasts for a quick lesson about the history of the game along with the stories of prominent players over the years. It is spread over an area of 35,000 square feet, and special features of the place include the world’s largest basketball that is 30 feet tall and weighs a whopping 10 tons. 

There is also a ‘Hall of Honors’ where names of popular and important players from the Hall of Fame are displayed. Apart from that, there are three different courts where players can test their basketball skills.

Muse Knoxville

The Muse Knoxville is a place dedicated to children. There are science and art galleries in the place, spanning over 4,000 square feet, and many exhibits in the museum focus on teaching children about science, engineering, technology, mathematics, arts, and culture with several hands-on activities. 

It also has themed educational sections with interactive exhibits that make learning fun for children by combining it with play. But the planetarium remains the major attraction at the museum which enables curious minds to explore and learn more about the solar system. It is a perfect day out for the children!

Peter Kern Library

If you want to spend an evening sipping on cocktails and making merry, head to the Perter Kern Library. The place can be identified with a red ball light, and it is a cozy oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.  

Upon entering, you will find a huge bar on your left, and a great speakeasy will greet you. Known for the old-fashioned cocktails on its menu, this is a speakeasy that you must not miss at all. It is a great place to spend some time with your friends and drink the night away!

Bleak House 

Thinking about what to do in Knoxville? Visit the Bleak House! With its long and interesting past, the Bleak House has been termed as a historic property and categorized under the United States Register of Historic Places. In the Battle of Knoxville between Confederates and Unionists, it became a prominent battle point. Even today, there are two cannons embedded in its walls.  

But now that there aren’t any canons balls being flung around (phew!), you can go on a tour inside the Bleak House and learn a great deal about its history as well as that of the Battle of Knoxville.

Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum 

The Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum in Knoxville, Tennessee is spread over an area of 47-acres and makes for a great day excursion for people who love the outdoors. This property was initially a part of a horticultural business, owned by a private family in 1786 and it was only in the year 2001, that it was converted to a public space. 

As of today, there are eight display gardens at the property with a beautiful network of walking trails, a butterfly meadow, and distinctive stone walls running for almost 2 miles. The garden is well-maintained and the staff working there is courteous and knowledgeable.

Want to taste the best burgers in town? Head straight to Stock and Barrel in Market Square. This is an all-American-style bar and restaurant, serving various kinds of lip-smacking local delicacies. Mount Vesuvius

Valley of the Temples

If you’re a history buff, you must make it a point to visit the famous Valley of the Temples situated in Agrigento. Nestled in Western Sicily, the Valley of Temples is an archaeological site that is among the most-renowned Italy attractions and is one of the best things to see in Italy.

Lake Como

Located at the foot of the Alps, just one hour away from Milan, is Lake Como, the third-largest lake in Italy. It is spread across a vast 146 square kilometers. Its placid waters are surrounded by lush greenery, steep mountain slopes, and an array of striking villas, making it a sight to behold for sore eyes.

Go Hiking at Cinque Terre 

Composed of five mesmerizing cliff-side villages that overlook the Mediterranean Sea, the vibrant towns of Cinque Terre feature among the best Italy tourist attractions.  

The five villages are: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manorala, and Riomaggiore, with Manorala being the oldest village of the lot. Corniglia is the only village that doesn’t have a direct connection with the waters of the sea. 

You might have been to many hiking trails before, but we doubt you’d find any as picturesque as Cinque Terre. Shutterbugs, do make sure that you’ve more than enough space on your memory cards before you pack your cameras for the hike!

Juliet’s House 

If you’ve read the famous Shakespeare play “Romeo and Juliet,” you are well aware of the fact that the titular characters resided in Verona, Italy. 

Now, Romeo and Juliet might well be fictional characters, but so famous was the play that in 1905, the city of Verona decided to buy the house believed to have inspired Shakespeare’s play. 

Cut to the present, the building, now known as Juliet’s House, is one of Italy’s major tourist attractions. No points for guessing which part of the house gets photographed the most; it is, of course, the iconic, and if we may add, immortal stone balcony.

Pompeii

A trip to Italy’s Campa region would allow you to witness the preserved remains of the historic city of Pompeii. 

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 is what caused this city to meet its untimely demise. At present, it is a UNESCO World Heritage City, featuring amongst Italy’s most famous tourist attractions. 

The Antiquarium of Pompeii at the site allows visitors to witness casts of those victimized by Mount Vesuvius’ eruption. It also presents archaeological discoveries of the excavations and displays that document Pompeii’s settlement history before it became a flourishing Roman city.

Rome 

How can any tourist guide revolving around Italy be complete without recommending a visit to its capital, and arguably its most famous city, Rome? Historic Center of Siena

Saint Mark’s Basilica 

Located only a few minutes away from Saint Mark’s Square in Venice is the iconic Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica, most commonly recognized as Saint Mark’s Basilica. 

In 1807, it replaced the cathedral of San Pietro di Castello to become the episcopal seat of the Patriarch of Venice.

Vatican City 

In all probability, your first memory of Vatican City will date back to your school’s general knowledge classes. It was introduced to you as the smallest city in the world. But it is so much more than that statistic!

Visit the artistic Florence 

If you are an art connoisseur wondering ‘What to do in Italy?’ then no other place can soothe your senses as much as Florence can. 

Florence is famous for its many Renaissance palaces and museums, each more captivating than the next. It boasts of a profound cultural heritage, too, playing shelter to almost half of Italian works of art. 

Some of the must-see places in Venice include the Uffizi Gallery, Piazza Della Signoria, the Duomo, the basilica San Miniato al Monte, the Cupola del Brunelleschi, and the splendid Tuscan countryside. A word to the wise – don’t try to rush through Florence in a day’s time. Give yourself at least a couple of days to truly relish the many wonders of this place.

Explore Venice in a Gondola 

You’re lying if you tell us that you haven’t fantasized even once about drifting along Venice’s many canals in a beguiling Gondola (preferably with your partner in your arms!).

Lecce: City of Baroque 

Lecce, situated in Italy’s southern Apulia region, is home to an astounding assortment of museums, churches, and palaces, all belonging to the distinctive Baroque style of architecture.

Port of Genoa 

The voyages and discoveries of Christopher Columbus are something that pretty much all of us are familiar with via history lessons or otherwise. Go to Beach 

If you’re a beach person, prepare to get spoilt for choice in Italy. The country is home to some of Europe’s most exquisite beaches, and it’d be quite criminal if you came back from Italy without frequenting at least one of them.

Milan: The Fashion Capital of the World 

Home to the showrooms and luxury boutiques of the who’s who of the fashion world, Milan is also one of Italy’s foremost financial centers. 

Besides being the global fashion capital, the city packs a bunch of other tourist attractions as well. For starters, it is the site of the Santa Maria delle Grazie, most notably known for housing “The Last Supper,” one of the Western world’s most revered murals.  

Milan also has the famous Piazze del Duomo, which is, of course, adorned by the spectacular Gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral. Other places of interest include the Sforza Castle and Parco Sempione, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Vittorio Emmanuel II gallery, and the monumental cemetery.

Crissy Field

Earlier an airfield, this place is currently a campground at the beach with panoramic views of the sea and the mountains in the distance.  It was restored and opened to the public in 2001, and since then, it has managed to be everyone’s favorite spot to visit.  

It lies well within the city limits and is a perfect spot for a leisurely family camping trip. It gives a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and is easy to access. Not just tourists, it is equally loved by the locals, who come here to spend time with nature. Disney California Adventure

Located near Disneyland, Disney California Adventure is a theme park that has seven different themed areas. One of the most famous rides at the Disney California Adventure, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, is a 360-degree rollercoaster ride that takes you on a loop.

Living Desert

Not just an ordinary zoo, the Living Desert is a conservation site that gives the children an experience of being close to wildlife. It is divided into two sections, Africa and North America. It is home to hundreds of animals such as camels, cheetahs, giraffes, and various other exotic species.  

If your children are adventurous, they can also take a ride on a camel and feed a giraffe. To take a view of the entire park, you can use the shuttle service and then stop wherever you wish to.

Crystal Cove State Park

Golden Gate Bridge

The most-loved icon in all of California is more than just a scenic view of the Sacramento River and imposing mountains. It also offers a valuable insight into the history of the city. The bridge’s height is 746 feet (227.4 meters), and it is about a mile (1.6 kilometers) wide.  

You can take a walk, ride a bike, or even enjoy a boat ride under the bridge for a different kind of viewing experience altogether. Visiting the state and not visiting the Golden Gate Bridge with your children sounds like an unfair deal. Griffith Observatory

If your children are obsessed with everything space and won’t stop talking about planets, stars, galaxies, and beyond, the Griffith Observatory will be a place where they would have a great time. This observatory has one of the world’s largest telescopes and is free to visit.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island in the middle of the sea was built as a federal prison. It is located about 1.25 miles (2.01 km) offshore from San Francisco. Though it is a small island, it holds the long history of America’s struggle for justice.  

It is said to be one of the most iconic prisons in the world, and some of the most notorious prisoners like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud have been imprisoned here. You can explore the tidepools, take guided tours or explore the ex-jail premises on your own. Sequoia National Park

The Sequoia National Park was established on September 25, 1890. It is situated on mountainous terrain, with its most iconic feature being the giant sequoia trees and the largest tree on Earth as per volume, the General Sherman tree.

La Brea Tar Pits

Long Beach Aquarium

Take a tour of the USS Hornet

During the second world war, the United States of America played a crucial role in shaping World Politics and creating the world as we know it today. The equipment that facilitated the country in achieving this has been stored and preserved.  

One such site is the USS Hornet Museum which has over 20,00 artifacts, including USS Hornet itself, which was a significant navy vessel. Grunion Run 

Don’t worry if you have not heard of something called a Grunion. They are a fascinating species of fish, about five to six inches long, silver in color, that leave the water at night and come on the beaches throughout the Southern part during the spring and summer months.  

You can visit the beaches to spot them but remember these are seasonal. To pick the Grunion, you will need a California fishing license which is given to individuals above the age of 16 only. The state is known for Grunion, and visiting here with your kids will become a memory that the kids will definitely remember for decades to come.

Calico Ghost Town

Calico was a former mining town back in 1881 abandoned in the 1890s, which led it to become a ghost town. This ghost town was later purchased by Walter Knott in the 1950s and was architecturally restored. However, he chose to keep five buildings the same as they were in the 1880s.  

Today, Calico stands as a country park and is visited by several tourists from across the globe. It also offers a range of recreational activities, such as off-roading, hiking, and camping.

Zurich Zoo 

The Zurich Zoo is considered to be one of the best in the entire Europe. It was opened in 1929 and is the third-oldest in Switzerland.

Grossmunster 

Lying in the Lindenhof area, Grossmunster is one of the city’s most known landmarks. It is a two-towered monastic church in the Romanesque architecture style.

Uetliberg Mountain  

Is the question, “What to do in Zurich”, haunting you again? Well, take off to Uetliberg Mountain. At 2,850 feet above sea level, you can get a bird’s view of the city from this mountaintop. Take a cable car to reach the spot.

Reiterpark is the city’s largest park spread over 70,000 square meters; it is not very far away from Zurich Lake. The villa is called Museum Reiterpark and showcases the art and archaeology of countries like East Asia, Buddhist-inspired structures, and African ones as well.  

It was built in 1855 and still beholds the aura of 19th-century architecture. Some of the trees in the premises were planted during the initial phase and are about 150 years old now, and they add to the beautiful landscape of Reiterpark.

Chagall Windows 

Present in the Fraumünster church in Old Town Zurich, this is a world-famous spot that depicts a Biblical story. It is a masterpiece by Marc Chagall, a Russian-French artist who skillfully painted five majestic glass windows in colors that cast a rainbow-like spread of lights.

Paradeplatz 

In the south of the city lies Paradeplatz, one of its most expensive real estate sites. It is the headquarters of UBS as well as Credit Suisse.  

At the beginning of the 19th century, it was named “Neumarkt” (meaning New Market) due to the rising business and then was again changed to “Paradeplatz” about 50 years later.

Zurich Opera House

Ever wondered about the human race? Where do we come from, and who are we? Well, you can hope to find answers to these complex questions at Kulturama, The Museum of Man.  

The center was set up more than four decades ago to spread scientific knowledge about the human race in a simplistic manner so that people across age groups can understand it.

Fraumunster 

Situated on the west shore of Limmat, Fraumunster Church is a popular tourist destination in the city. The church is an iconic landmark of the city and is well-known for the Chagall Windows.  

The structure was built on the opposite side of the river to the Grossmünster in the middle of the 9th century. Currently, it is the largest church in the Canton of Zurich.

Chinese Garden 

Situated by the lake, it is said to have been a gift from Kunming, the city’s Chinese partner town. It was gifted to the city as a token of gratitude for the technical and scientific assistance in developing the drinking water supply and drainage in Kunming.

Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate, a neoclassical monument was built by the Prussian king Frederick William II in the 18th century. Its construction was ordered by the king after the capture of Brandenburg (albeit the capture was temporary!). It is the emblematic symbol of the reunification of Germany.

The famous “gate” is located in the Tiergarten district and is bordered by Ebertstraße to the north, Friedrichstraße to the west, and Bellevuestraße to the south. (P.S. If you want to avoid huge crowds, visit early in the day!)

Tiergarten

A trip to this city is incomplete without a visit to the Tiergarten. Tempelhof Airport

Initially built in the early 30s, Tempelhof Airport is a strategic war airport that ceased operations in 2008. Subsequently, it has been converted into a recreational space, and it is considered to be one of the best places to visit in Berlin.

Gemäldegalerie

The Gemäldegalerie (literally “Paintings Gallery”) is one of the largest art museums in Berlin that houses paintings and sculptures from around the world, brought here by artist Max Liebermann.

Insel der Jugend (Island of Youth)

The Insel der Jugend is one of the most valuable natural sites in Germany. The Försterhaus, a larger house erected here for Treptow’s forest ranger, used to be his home office but was later expanded into a restaurant with an old-world ambiance and stunning pieces of art.

At first glance, it doesn’t look different from other pavilions or pavilion buildings. On a closer look, you will realize that it is not raised above ground level but built on basalt rock outcroppings high above the water level. The Island of Youth is an intriguing tourist spot for sure!

Unter den Linden

Unter den Linden, located in the Mitte district, is a boulevard lined on both sides by lush greenery. The historical axis of German politics and culture since the early 18th century, it played a part in popularizing the Prussia capital of Berlin as a whole.

Unter den Linden is an east-west street running from the City Palace to the Alexanderplatz. It ran parallel to Friedrichstraße and formed a part of the royal route connecting the Palace of Sanssouci in Potsdam to the city center. Significant landmarks along Unter den Linden include the Brandenburg Gate, the Humboldt University, Zeughaus, and Museum Island.

Topography of Terror

Located in the city center and only a 15-minute walk from the Reichstag, you’ll find a very disturbing piece of history. The site, known as “Topography of Terror,” was previously the home of the Gestapo, SS, and Nazi political leaders. This location now serves as a tribute to those that were killed under the Nazi regime.

Gendarmenmarkt

Gendarmenmarkt is a square in Berlin-Mitte, the central part of the city. Like most other places, it is part of an area badly damaged during World War II and later rebuilt.

Visit the tallest building in Germany: TV Tower Berlin (Berliner Fernsehturm)

Standing like a voyeuristic giant, the Berliner Fernsehturm is the tallest structure in Berlin and the second tallest in Germany. Berliner Fernsehturm was developed as an acronym for “Transmitting Station.” The Berlin Tower was built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as a monument of national pride. It was a part of their celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the German Workers’ Party (GWP).

The construction of the Berliner Fernsehturm lasted from June 1969 to January 1971, with a total cost of approximately 3.5 million marks. Built as a testament to the human spirit and ambition amidst Cold War, the Berliner Fernsehturm’s construction was considered an engineering marvel.

Berlin Cathedral

Cathedrals like the Berlin Cathedral were some of the most impressive buildings from the Middle Ages for their sheer scale and size. They were built on some of the earliest geometric principles of construction and have stood the test of time.

Checkpoint Charlie

Alexanderplatz

Alexanderplatz is a large public square and transport hub in the center of Berlin. It is named after Alexander II, the last Emperor of Russia, who laid the first stone for the first structure of the square, a triumphal arch dedicated to Empress Elisabeth (Sophie), wife of Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria.

A large central station, it is one of the busiest blocks of the city, and there’s a strong chance you will use it too, at some point in your travel.

Treptower Park

Treptower Park is located along the banks of the River Spree, which marks the eastern boundary of Treptow, a neighborhood of Berlin. Narrowly speaking, this park was built between 1935 and 1945. It contains a number of war memorials commemorating Germans killed during World War II, such as the memorials of the Soviet Army, resistance fighters, and those who fled the Nazis. There are also sports facilities and a restaurant to cater to recreational needs.

Treptower Park was a listed monument of the GDR because it symbolizes the memory of the dead soldiers of WWII and the German Division after 1945. You can find collectives from World War II, memorials, and cemeteries at the park too. In the northern part, you will also find an open-air exhibition about environmental topics, waste management, water pollution, etc.

The Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast) is a self-described “institution of the heart” employing artists who are dedicated to the principle of hospitality through compassion. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

The majestic Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche or Gedächtniskirche) is a Neo-Romanesque building decorated with a distinctive white steeple.

Located in the western part of the city center, near the river Spree, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of the most well-known landmarks in Berlin. It served as a symbol of reconciliation between former enemies of war and is now a de facto (though not de jure) co-cathedral of the Berlin diocese. Berlin Philharmonie

Berlin Philharmonie is a famous concert hall and a must-see when in the capital. The building site was established in 1851 and was initially built from wood. In 1980, the concrete construction for this was started, based on plans drawn up by architect Hans Scharoun. His oldest son, Manfred Scharoun, took over the construction work from 1984 until its inauguration in 1999.

The hall seats 1,800 visitors and provides a wide range of artistic offerings. It is used not only for concerts but also for theater and dance performances or conferences. Mauerpark

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mauerpark was one of the first things that came into existence. It was initially built as a temporary site for the farmers that used to sell their produce there, and it grew and grew and grew (it’s even bigger now!).

Today it is used as a recreational space to hosts concerts and festivals, and it is incredibly vibrant. Mauerpark is an urban oasis full of life and energy. Named after the wall that once separated east and west Berlin, Mauerpark is located in Prenzlauer Berg, one of northeastern Berlin’s most popular areas. The space is home to countless projects ranging from art installations to vineyards, but its main charm comes from the people who flock to it.

Museum für Naturkunde (Natural History Museum)

Known to the English-speaking world as the Natural History Museum, it has existed in several incarnations and under a variety of names since it was founded in 1810, making it one of the oldest museums in Europe. It houses the world’s largest mounted dinosaur and an 80-meter long Giraffatitan skeleton, which was unveiled on May 20, 2002.

Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery)

Old National Gallery is one of many stunning buildings in Berlin which form a part of the city’s rich history. It has been restored and renovated by the government, and it is now one of the most prestigious art museums and a major tourist attraction here. Located on Museum Island, the Alte Nationalgalerie was built in 1876 by Friedrich August Stüler as a gallery for German art and paintings from the Middle Ages to the early 20^th century.

The building is enormous, with a length of 130 meters and a width of 40 meters, covering an area of 27,000 square meters! Tour the city with the symbolic Trabi

There are three things that define Berlin: Brandenburg gate, Reichstag, and Trabi. The Trabi, short for Trabant, is a classic symbol of the East German part of the city. The name Trabant is a combination of “traben” and “antrieb” — literally meaning to pull and drive. Made in Eastern Germany, the car was exported throughout the Eastern Bloc countries and even as far as West Africa.

Today, tourists visiting the country’s capital travel back in time with the iconic Trabants zipping around the city. Over three million of these classic cars were produced between 1957 and 1991, which amounts to 50 percent of all GDR cars.

Berlin Zoo

Berlin Zoo is most well known for being the first zoo in the world to succeed in keeping alive three white rhinoceros that weren’t thought capable of being kept alive in captivity. It is also home to more than 8000 animals from 650 species.

The in-door exhibitions at the zoo include a large aquarium through which visitors can view aquatic life from every angle. With artificial waves and speakers playing underwater sounds, you feel as if you are walking on the seafloor, making it a unique, must-have experience.

Berlin Wall Memorial

For 25 years now, tourists and locals alike have gathered at the Berlin Wall Memorial to look back into the city’s tumultuous past. The wall was built during the Cold War to prevent Eastern Bloc defectors. Its purpose was to divide the city into East and West, of East Germany and West Germany respectively, physically and ideologically.

Spanning 155.3 kilometers (96.3 miles), the Berlin Wall was erected by the GDR (East Germany) beginning in 1961 to stem the flight of people attempting to leave for West Berlin and Western countries. The Wall was erected in a manner so that it would be an internationally recognized war boundary that could not simply be passed through.

Stasi Museum

The Stasi Museum seeks to make its past victims speak for themselves. WWII Bunker

Bunkers are war covers that hide a great deal of historical interest. Hidden away underground or underwater, they were the last resort of the war men who found themselves behind enemy lines after June 6, 1944. They were employed by both sides in the Second World War on many fronts but especially by Germany.

Today, these war bunkers have been transformed into an interesting museum about World War II which tells the story of the Nazi empire. It was heavily damaged by Allied bombing but has been reconstructed in recent years. The basement isn’t open for tours, but there are still over ten stories to explore.

German-Russian Museum

Lying on a beautiful hill in northern Berlin is a building with walls that radiate history. The German-Russian Museum documents the relationship between Germany and Russia from 1561 to today’s current geopolitical climate. It was created by renowned architect Alfred Messel to be a replica of the Palace built by Galitzin near St. Petersburg, Russia.

This may not seem like much of a tourist attraction for those who are not history buffs or art enthusiasts; however, it is still worth a visit. Surround yourself with nature in Spreewald

Spreewald, a region in northeastern Germany in the state of Brandenburg, is a paradise for nature lovers. It has a unique landscape with meandering rivers and lakes, making the area a truly unforgettable destination at any time of the year. The region was formerly a private hunting forest of the Prince-electors from Saxony. In 1653, it became part of Brandenburg-Prussia and was named “Spreewald,” meaning “Freshwater forest.” This area exists on the southeastern outskirts of Berlin.

This protected nature reserve is one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests, spanning over 20,000 hectares of land. But Spreewald isn’t just one big forest or meadow. Instead, it’s made up of smaller areas called Köpen (pronounced “coh-pehn”), each with its own characteristics and distinct natural landscape.

Teufelsberg aka “Devils Mountain”

The Teufelsberg (“Devils Mountain”) is a 176-meter-tall hill made from rubble and debris from the Wall and destroyed buildings of the city. The remains of the buildings were transported to this area in 1956 and 1957 after clearing out the East German territory.

On what used to be West Berlin’s largest listening station, the Panorama Observation Tower now offers guests scenic vistas over the city. The viewing platform at Teufelsberg rises 61 meters (200 feet) into the glistening blue sky overlooking the busy capital.

AquaDom

AquaDom is one of the most unique Berlin attractions that draw people to it for different reasons. For some, it’s just another aquarium to see. For others, it’s simply a neat way to catch fish and other sea creatures up close and personal. It is a marvelous structure built in the 1970s, designed by Horst H. Baumann. The structure is a giant glass tank, no less than 14 meters in depth!

Ramones Museum

Flak Tower III Humboldthain

What to do in Berlin? This. The 25-story Flakturm II Humboldthain was built in the 1930s as part of the Ringbahn defense works comprising the Aussenring with six anti-aircraft towers.

The Flakturm III Humboldthain is well hidden in the former Tempelhof airport. It was built between 1941 and 1942 as a flak tower and has never been equipped with armament. After the surrender of Berlin, it was occupied by American and Soviet soldiers and then by the East German army. Today, it stands as a monument that marks the rich history of Berlin.

Oberbaumbrücke

Oberbaumbrücke (literal translation: Upper-Rhine Bridge) is the oldest standing bridge in Germany. It is the first permanent bridge across the River Spree. It connects the boroughs of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, former towns in East Berlin that were joined together. The bridge once formed part of German highway 101; it now carries tram lines.

Sand Key Park

Pinellas Trail

The Pinellas Trail, also known as the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail, covers about 47 miles. In the north, it stretches up to Tarpon Springsand in the south, it stretches up to St. Petersburg. It passes through Clearwater, among many other cities.  

The Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail is named after a former Pinellas County Administrator, Fred Marquis, and provides a unique green space for jogging, skating, and cycling. The Caladesi Island State Park is situated to the south of Honeymoon Island State Park and is accessible by a ferry or private boat from there.

Carmel-by-the-sea 

Talking about day trips from San Francisco, do not miss Carmel-by-the-sea. This sleepy, romantic beach town is just over two hours’ drive south of the city. Carmel-by-the-sea is famous for its old-town ambiance, fairytale-like cottages, and art galleries.  

The town gives a pristine view of Carmel Bay. At Point Lobos in Carmel-by-the-sea, you can find a variety of sea animals and wildlife and enjoy diving, too. If you are lucky, you may even spot some whales.

Sebastopol 

A laid-back town in Sonoma County, Sebastopol is worth visiting for its charm and surprises. Once a predominantly apple-growing area, it now has many vineyards and wineries as well.  

You can have delicious food, shop for rare antiques, visit local farms, and go golfing, hiking, or biking here. Florence Avenue displays imaginative and colorful pieces of art made using recycled trash.  

The Barlow features a cluster of old warehouses used by apple canneries, which have been converted into a trendy marketplace. You can also explore the Laguna de Santa Rosa, which is the country’s largest freshwater wetlands complex and houses perennial marshes, oak woodlands, and grasslands.  

Sebastopol is also famous for Gravenstein apples and annually hosts an Apple Blossom Festival. Instead of planning a day trip here, spend a couple of days.

Silicon Valley 

A must-visit place during a day trip, Silicon Valley in California will leave you in complete awe. Home to many tech giants, you will come out of this place more intrigued and impressed.  

The day trip will be informative and interesting. The drive from San Francisco to Silicon Valley is just under an hour, and the Google Campus and Apple Park Visitor Centre must be a part of your tour.

Big Sur

The drive to Big Sur, through Highway 1, along the Pacific Coast is breathtaking. Big Sur also offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking.  

You can visit the McWay Falls, which is one of the two waterfalls in California that directly plunge into the ocean. Or, you can lose yourself in the wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest.  

Camping grounds are also available along Big Sur for those who want to rest and explore the area a bit more. You can even plan a getaway and relax at the spas here. This is not a day trip, so make sure you have ample time.

Point Reyes 

You can reach Point Reyes by driving for just over an hour from the city. So, this is ideal for a day trip. This beautiful national preserve is a popular tourist attraction, and it is home to over 1,500 species of plants and animals.  

You can hike your way up to the edge to witness the ocean crashing against the rocks, and you can also watch the majestic elks at the Tule Elk Preserve. While Point Reyes Station is a small cozy town nearby, Point Reyes National Seashore has many beaches to explore.  

From January to April, you may be able to catch glimpses of the migrating whales from the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

This two-hour ride can be considered one of the best weekend trips from San Francisco. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk welcomes you with California’s oldest amusement park.

Marin Headlands 

The Marin Headlands is a very short drive away and one of the best day trips from San Francisco. It is a hilly peninsula located just north of the city, at the southernmost end of Marin County in California.  

The area is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It gives a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge and The Bay Area.

University Town (Berkeley) 

The city of Berkeley is home to the University of California. It is the first campus of the University of California and is ranked among the top universities in the world.  

Just half an hours’ drive from Sausalito, the university has classical-style buildings. Sather Tower, one of the tallest bell towers in the world, is situated at the center of Berkeley. The ring of its bell can be heard from across the campus.

Half Moon Bay is a charming, quaint coastal town on the California Coast just 30 miles south of San Francisco. It gets its name because of the beautiful crescent-shaped harbor to the north of the town.  

The coastline has some gorgeous beaches, while the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary lets you enjoy an area full of marine biodiversity.  

You can enjoy local craft beer at the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. The world-famous surfing spot, Mavericks Beach, draws many surfers. Do spend some time here, so don’t plan a day trip.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Visiting Rosamond Gifford Zoo is one of the must things to do in Syracuse. It is among the top Syracuse attractions. It is spread over 43 acres and houses more than 700 animals from almost 216 species.

Niagara Mohawk Building

One of the other things to do in Syracuse is visiting the Niagara Mohawk Building. This iconic building was built in 1932 and served as the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation headquarters.  

It is a splendid example of Art-Deco architecture and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its creators envisioned it as the cathedral of light. True to that vision, it has many stunning features and lights up in a variety of styles at night.

Everson Museum of Art 

Situated in downtown Syracuse, it is the first museum which is dedicated entirely to American art and artists. It’s the first to have a collection of ceramics and also a collection of videos as an art form.

Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology 

One of the popular Syracuse attractions, this place has something to interest visitors across age groups.  

Also referred to as MoST, it is located in Armory Square. It is 35,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, where you can learn about geology, technology, outer space, paleontology, and much more.

Salt Museum

Syracuse supplied the majority of salt to the whole of America during the 19th century and is still known as the “Salt City”. The museum is situated in Liverpool, a short drive from the city, and houses exhibits and artifacts used during that time.  

You can visit the site and see how brine was turned into salt on boiling blocks using kettles, wooden barrels, and tools. You will find guides dressed in period clothing which will take you on a tour of the entire place.  

The place has been constructed using the actual timbers used in salt warehouses.

Erie Canal Museum

Erie Canal Museum is a historic place housed in the country’s only remaining weighlock building. It exhibits artifacts dealing with the Erie Canal and emphasizes its role in making the state of New York what it is today.  

The canal has played a very important role in the country’s expansion towards the West. The exhibits have been designed thoughtfully and are informative and entertaining.  

Admission to the museum is free, but they encourage a $5 donation. Make sure to visit this place if history excites you. This is definitely one of the things to see in Syracuse.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que 

This started as a small mobile concession stand and a biker bar. But now, it has now become one of the most famous barbeque chains in the state.  

The restaurant serves Southern-style meats in retro settings and has a bar and music venue playing live blues music. It boasts of fresh, homemade recipes and drinks and has been featured in Good Morning America, Food Network, and Travel Channel.

The Unique Upside-Down Traffic Signal 

The Tipperary Hill Traffic Light is one of the most unique Syracuse attractions. Unlike every other traffic signal in America, this one displays the green light above the red.  

The story goes that the majority of the labor team responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal were Irish immigrants. These families belonged to the County Tipperary and thus the area’s name.  

However, when a traffic signal was installed, the Irish felt that the red light at the top stood for British preference, and therefore, they would repeatedly break it. Eventually, it was decided to reverse the signal, and so it stands till this day.

Clinton Square

Clinton Square displays stunning buildings representing the historic culture of the city. It is a favorite hangout for visitors and locals alike.  

It came into existence in the 19th century and, since then, has been a place for get-togethers. The Square houses several important monuments like the Soldiers and Sailors Monument and the Jerry Rescue Monument.  

A large ice rink is set up in the middle of the square during the winters, and during summers, a big farmers’ market occupies the place. Besides these, a number of festivals and events keep taking place at the square. There are many local bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops here.

Catch a show at Landmark Theatre 

One of the fun things to do in Syracuse is to visit the Landmark Theater. It is from the era of lavish movie palaces. The theater reminds you of the time gone by, with its beautiful murals and architecture. 

It is the city’s only surviving example of opulent, theatrical venues from the 1920s. Once, it was decided to demolish the theater. However, it was saved time and again and was finally listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  

Today, the theater hosts live performances, concerts, and events, and will give you all the rich feel on your visit.

The Westcott Theater 

This is a comparatively new theater serving the crowd of Syracuse University and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.  

It was originally constructed as a movie theater in 1919 and has now been changed into a live music venue. It features an array of house sound systems and new stage monitoring functionality.  

The theater has been upgraded to make the venue more adaptable for private events, corporate parties, and other large-scale parties.

Beaver Lake Nature Center 

Beaver Lake Nature Center is a nature lover’s paradise with more than 661 acres. It is just a short drive from the city and offers a lot of activities for all age groups. 

The trails here give you a chance to explore the center’s diverse habitat. There are more than 200 species of birds and 800 plant varieties here. During summer, you can participate in a number of water activities and also rent canoes and kayaks.  

Springtime brings in the migratory Canada Geese to the lake. The trails are also used for educational tours by schools. During winters, the trails are used for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Stickley Museum 

It opened in 2007 and honors the legacy of the Stickley Brothers, who designed excellent, high-quality wooden furniture. It highlights the workers’ craftsmanship, whose commitment to quality led to Stickley’s reputation for manufacturing heirloom quality furniture.  

Their furniture was very popular as it was made for usage and not just to be placed as décor items. The place is spread over 8,000 square feet and exhibits historical furniture as well as images and documents, which illustrate the significance and journey of the company.

Webster Pond 

Located to the south of the city, Webster Pond is a 95-acre sanctuary. It is operated and maintained by the Anglers Association.  

The park adjacent to the pond, Rand Tract, has a 2-mile hiking trail through the surrounding woods. The meticulously manicured grounds have many benches for people to rest.  

The association offers many programs, including fishing instructions, to people of all age groups. You can feed the ducks here by buying a large bag of dried corn from the association volunteers. Wildlife here includes ducks, geese, turtles, opossum, deer, and foxes.

Onondaga Historical Association 

Here, you will find America’s largest collection of regional historical treasures, as it celebrates the County’s culture, architecture, and people.  

The museum has three permanent exhibits on the Underground Railroad, Chinese immigration, and Onondaga County itself. It showcases the fashion of people in the early 20th century and their lives in the county during the Second World War. 

It houses more than two million archival photos, maps, documents, and records related to the County. Apart from the permanent exhibits, it also showcases temporary exhibits from time to time. The association’s research center is also open for visitors.

Onondaga Lake Park

Known as the Central Park of Central New York, this is a linear greenway that stretches over 7 miles and has spectacular scenery. Located on the shores of Onondaga Lake, it houses the famous Salt Museum and has four beautiful trails.  

The property includes the Wegmans Boundless Playground, which is the largest play space accessible to kids and adults in Central New York. At the Griffin Visitor Center, you can rent bikes or skates and explore the biking trails.  

Here, you can enjoy a game of volleyball, bocce, or shuffleboard. You can also try your luck at fishing at the fishing pier. Here, events are held year-round, so make sure to check the events calendar before planning your trip here.

E. M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden 

E. M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden is located in Thornden Park near Syracuse University campus. It has been named after the former President of the Syracuse Rose Society.  

The garden is filled with more than 3,000 varieties of roses and looks beautiful, especially when the flowers are in full bloom in June. It has been maintained meticulously by the volunteers from the Rose Society.  

You can also join the volunteers on Wednesdays till noon. Here, you can also learn about rose plants and how to grow them. Your visit will be not only a treat for your eyes but also a learning experience.

Community Folk Art Center 

This center has played an important role in bringing forward the work of African American artists in Central New York. It is committed towards collecting, exhibiting, teaching, and interpreting the visual and expressive arts.

Onondaga Creekwalk

The Onondaga Creekwalk is a multi-use partly bricked 2.6 mile-long trail. It follows the course of Onondaga Creek to Onondaga Lake.  

There are plans to extend the trail to connect it to the Lake Trail and Erie Canal Trail. It is used by bicyclists, skaters, and pedestrians and is lined with many lights, signs, and benches. 

The highlights of the trail include a view of the National Grid Building from W Washington Street, crossing the creek on an old railroad bridge. Enjoy the views along the creek walk and a spectacular view of the lake at the trail’s northern terminus.

Onondaga County Public Library 

This public library has more than 30 branches all over Onondaga County, but the one in downtown Syracuse is the headquarters, also referred to as the Central Library.  

Here, there is a vast assortment of traditional resources as well as digital ones. It has a large collection of books and an award-winning local History Department. 

The library has a MakerSpace with front-line technology where you can learn, create and build. It also consists of a music recording room, sewing machines, 3-D printer and other tools which visitors can use.  

It also houses a KidSpace for the children to learn and have fun, apart from hosting programs for all age groups.

Clark Reservation State Park 

This is also a very short drive from the city and houses a small lake in the basin. Interestingly, the bottom water of the lake does not mix with the surface water.  

The area is filled with woods as well as meadows and has many nature trails. Guided nature walks are offered here. You will also find the cliff, plunge basin, and the gorge of an ancient waterfall that existed during the ice age, along with other rocky formations.  

It is also a principal site for American Hart’s Tongue fern, which is considered to be an endangered species. The place also offers fishing, picnic tables, and pavilions.

Take a sip at Lakeland Winery 

Lakeland Winery was established by Andrew Watkins, a wine enthusiast, as the first custom wine-making facility in the state. They offer wine tasting, personal wine-making parties, and classes.  

Visit them, and they will lead you through the entire process step by step, starting from sampling and choosing. You can schedule a private wine-making party or join other visitors. 

Here, you can make a batch of 30 bottles of your own wine. You will have to return after 7 weeks to collect the wine you made.  

The winery also hosts private events and can make customized wines for special events. You can choose from reds, whites, mediums, fruit-based, ice, and dessert wines.

This is a huge farmers’ market situated north of the city. It is one of the oldest such places in the state and has been operating since 1942.  

It’s a hybrid area with public-private and retail-wholesale things available. Here, you can find heaps of fresh local items such as farm produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, bread, and more that have been produced nearby.  

There are also shops for handmade items, plants, wines and liquor.

Syracuse Pedal Tour 

Another fun thing to do in Syracuse is to book a pedal tour. This eco-friendly way of sightseeing is popular amongst the locals as well as visitors.  

The bike can seat 13 people at a time, and the seats are built in such a way that you can enjoy conversations with your fellow passengers. The bike also has a non-pedaling seat at the end for anyone who cannot pedal for any reason.
